Championship weekend also featured a men’s and women’s 3-point shootout, a skills competition and a hot shot competition.


The winner of the


men’s 3-point shootout was Sam Owsley (Denver, Colo.) of Vae Victus, while Gibson won the women’s competition. Tyler Morris of Vae Victus and Walker won the men’s and women’s skills competition, respec- tively, and Nick Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nate Lark (Colorado Springs, Colo.) of Pluto, and Napheesa Collier (St. Louis, Mo.) and Cierra Porter (Columbia, Mo.) of Primus earned top honors in the men’s and women’s hot shot competition.


In addition to the


on-court experience, all of the participants stayed on complex at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, where they ate, slept and played amongst other national team members and Olympic hopefuls from many different sports.


“I think that is the best


part about it, even better than the basketball,” said Team Freestyle's Kevin Lawrence (Colorado Springs, Colo). “I'm from Los Angeles. I've been in Colorado Springs for about four years, and I've never seen anything like this before. Just from the dorms, reminds me a little bit of college, the cafeteria to seeing everyone in U-S-A gear. It feels really good. I never thought I'd put U-S-A on my chest, or have the opportu- nity to. It seems like an accomplishment for me.”


The first day of competition saw


outstanding competition and plenty of games that came down to the wire.


Two teams, one men’s and one


women’s, finished the preliminary round undefeated. Metro State out of Denver,

Aug. 4, No. 1 Group B seed Metro State was surprised by Group A No. 4 seed Freestyle 19-13, while Group A No. 1 seed Pluto narrowly slipped past


Group B No. 4 seed Grind Mode 21-20. Harvesters edged Chicago 21-19, and Denver downed Vae Victis 22-12 to earn the final spots in the semifinals. Pluto and Denver, the men’s top two


seeds in Group A, won their semifinals games to set the stage for the gold medal game rematch between the two teams. In the women’s semifinals, FST-L.I.


powered past Colorado Springs Ballers 21-14, while Primus rolled to a 21-8 victory over NYC Ballers setting the stage for a rematch for the gold medal.
