Pop and sizzle: Circuit race heats up W

By Elizabeth Demers, Junior Bonspiels Chairwoman

ith more players than ever and a bounty of eligible bon- spiels, the USWCA Circuit has provided a new level of ex- citing competition for the 2013-14 season.

Several bonspiels that elected to be part of the Circuit in 2013-14 have

seen a boost both in registrations and in level of play. “If a person is a member of the Circuit, you know they are dedicated

curlers and therefore are accomplished curlers, which does bring up the level of competition," said Ellen Dowd of the Kettle Moraine Curling Club. "We think the benefi ts of being in the Circuit are bringing quality curlers to our bonspiels plus increasing the number of people participating. We had 20 competitive teams in our Fall Fling, which supports this.” T e Circuit has seen a phenomenal 68 percent growth in individual par-

ticipation in the last year. Demographically, the heart of the Circuit beats in the East and Wisconsin regions, which have the highest number of indi- vidual participants as well as the most member bonspiels. But the Circuit race isn’t defi ned by region, as the midseason points totals show. Curlers in the tiny Central division top the leaderboard, with Wisconsin and Eastern women in hot pursuit. By its very nature, the Circuit invites travel and ex- ploration, bringing eastern teams west and vice versa. Nutmeg teams went to Wisconsin for the inaugural Madison Schmecken Spiel, while a Madison team returned the courtesy call at the Nutmeg Crystal Snowfl ake, in Con- necticut. Circuit organizers expect this trend to grow, especially in the sun- shine of the Winter Olympics. With U.S. curling heating up on the Road to Sochi, women curlers have “the eye of the tiger” as they eye club 'spiels across the country, sweeping their own Circuit road to glory. ■

Look for upcoming USWCA events at your club and in your region

All-American:T e All-American is an inter-club event held during

the curling season by member clubs throughout the United States. T e USWCA provides beautiful All-American pins to each member club for their event. T is event was designed to encourage the involvement of women –

especially new and less experienced women curlers – so they can have a bonspiel experience within their own clubs. 5 year & under: T e goal of these events is to give newer curlers a

chance to participate in bonspiels, meet other new curlers and play po- sitions they normally wouldn’t play. Curlers will feel less concern about attending regular bonspiels aſt er they have played against others with the same experience. All curlers with fi ve or fewer years experience are eligible to participate. Junior bonspiels: Look forward to junior bonspiels at Nutmeg Curl-

ing Club, Feb. 21-23 and Evergreen Curling Club, Feb. 28-March 2. T ese events are very fun for junior curlers and a wonderful opportu- nity to practice developing skills.
