Pre-register for the 2014 Arena Nationals in Lansing

By Dawn Leurquin, Event Services Manager

in Dimondale, Mich., selected as the 2014 arena nationals host club for the June 12-15 event, registration details are now in the works. March 15 has been determined as the pre-registration deadline, or in other words, the final date for USA Curling's member arena clubs to express their interest in and commitment to bringing forward a men’s and/or women’s team. May 15 will follow as the deadline for selected teams to register for the competi- tion. Arena curling club presidents were emailed event details including the

preregistration link in January. Because some emails did not go through, certain club presidents may not have received the notice but may want to preregister teams. Member arena club presidents who did not receive the email can visit the USA Curling website where they will find the arena championships information, including the preregistration form, under the events tab where the national events are listed. Aſter the preregistration deadline falls, teams will be selected by the Arena Curling Committee with priority being given to clubs that enter both a men’s and a women’s team. Rules information can be found on the USA Curling website in the cham- pionships section. For basic event guidelines, refer to the general eligibility section; Page 22 contains event specific information. Te championships will again feature 32 teams, with a men’s and a wom-

en’s division. Each region is assured of at least one entry with preference going to clubs that enter both a men’s and a women’s team. Please note that this season’s rules state that: “Each team may have a maximum of two play- ers who also curl at a dedicated ice facility. Stick curlers are not eligible to

per team. Typically during USCA playdown processes all teams competing for a spot at the national event register with the USCA and pay the USCA's registration fee. However, for the arena championships, only teams participating at the national event are required to regis- ter and pay these fees, which cover arena ice rental and other expenses related to this great event. Instead, the intent of the arena committee is that club playdown fees paid by teams competing to go on to the national championship be used to defray the ex- penses of clubs that are entering teams at the national level. Te committee is hoping that the savings will encourage new teams to participate and learn about the competitive process. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely at the inaugural arena event in

2013, and we’re expecting even greater interest in participation this year. If interest picks up, it’s possible that the number of ice sheets utilized during the arena championships could be adjusted for future arena events. If you are not participating in this event, be sure to check out the event online. n
