Welcome 11th–13th February

Q&A with Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, organisers of Middle East Electricity and Solar Middle East

Middle East Electricity is in its 39th year, that’s quite an achievement, you must be proud?

Thank you, yes we are. Middle East Electricity is not only the longest running power event in the region, but it is also the largest, attracting more than 18,000 unique visitors from 120 countries to the last edition.

Over the three days of the event, that equates to innumerable prospective customers coming through the exhibition doors every hour, which is certainly good news for the 1,000+ participating exhibitors.

Much of the longevity of the show can also be attributed to the fact that regardless of economic lifecycles, where other industries can be adversely affected, or rely on economic upswings to thrive, power generation, lighting, renewable and nuclear energy are crucial to the infrastructural development of the region as populations grow and energy demand increases.

Since our inaugural event 39 years ago, Informa Exhibitions has developed a wealth of industry knowledge, and exhibitor and visitor intelligence that we continue to build upon.

What would you say makes Middle East Electricity and Solar Middle East so popular?

Dubai as a strategic location is a key factor contributing to Middle East Electricity’s success. It is the cross-roads and gateway to the Middle East for both international and regional energy players looking to tap into a lucrative and booming energy sector.

We have tracked visitors from over 120 countries who have come to the event to purchase or procure products or services for their respective markets. We wouldn’t be able to achieve that kind of reach if the business environment here wasn’t conducive for these entities to do business.

Moreover, the world’s attention has been focused on the entire Middle East as a growth area for solar, with Dubai located right at its heart. Dubai presents an international platform with genuine global and regional reach, providing the perfect location to host Solar Middle East and Middle East Electricity.

What are the highlights of this year’s conference?

The Green Energy Conference will provide a valuable opportunity for all professionals in the energy industry to deepen their knowledge and to network with colleagues.

The second edition of the Green Energy Conference will feature interesting presentations including the opening address by HE Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality about the company’s vision for a sustainable future.

His presentation will spotlight new initiatives to reduce energy consumption at Dubai Municipality by over 20 per cent in the next three years and outline future initiatives in line with the Dubai Strategic Plan 2020.

Tayeb M.M.H.Al Awadhi, Vice President of Power and Desalination at Dubai Aluminium will deliver a presentation about optimising energy efficiency,

highlighting the company’s commitment toward safety and energy conservation.

Are you looking forward to the MEE Awards? Absolutely. The Middle East Electricity Awards reflect the areas that are essential for the development and growth of the energy industry and highlight the positive work and contribution that companies and individuals have made in the region.

This year we’ve received more than 250 nominations across nine different categories, which include three new categories that reflect the increasingly dynamic regional energy sector – the Young Engineer of the Year, Best Marketing Campaign, and the Best Product Launch at Middle East Electricity 2014.

Winners are celebrated amongst industry peers and key regional decision makers, identifying them as the best in the business, but for us, it’s really our opportunity to recognise, appreciate and celebrate their accomplishments in the last twelve months.

The event is set to be bigger than ever, how many people are you expecting?

At Middle East Electricity, we continue to build on our strengths while identifying areas for improvement. Our success is the success of our exhibitors and manufacturers who come to our show. Everyone in the Informa Energy team is constantly striving to understand what drives the industry. We see the event in terms of communicating and doing business.

The 2013 edition of Middle East Electricity attracted

30 per cent more visitors than in 2012 and we are expecting an increase in visitor numbers this year as well.

What are your plans going into MEE 2015?

Working on Middle East Electricity is an ongoing process and so work on the 2015 edition will start during the 2014 show. Whether it is re-booking long- standing, loyal exhibitors or understanding expectations for the next year, work will start very soon.

We will review the 2014 edition of Middle East Electricity immediately after the show closes, looking at what worked and where there is room for improvement. Our dialogue with our exhibitors is vital to this process. Any new developments we make will then be announced in due course.
