The Middle East companies looking for ASTA validation for switchgear assemblies and transformers can now get local service from a new partnership between Intertek and SREC Laboratory. Abu Dhabi based SREC has been supplying electrical transmission and distribution equipment for 30 years. The SREC Laboratory safety testing services, enhanced by the new partnership with Intertek, will enable Middle East clients to bring their equipment to market faster through ASTA validation. Mr Mohan Joseph Cheeran, Managing Director of SREC Laboratory, says, “Regional demand for such services are growing and SREC is pleased to come into partnership with Intertek to provide test services to regional clientele. The services will be enhanced to cover more tests in the near future”. UK based Intertek is a leading quality solutions
provider to industries worldwide. Kaco opens new Riyadh office
German inverter manufacturer Kaco New Energy has opened an office in Riyadh. Kaco and its Saudi partner, Advanced Electronics Company (AEC), unveiled the Saudi-manufactured Shams range of inverters in September 2013 – and the 20 kW to 1.5 MW range will be distributed across the Middle East from the new Riyadh base.
Astonfield to install pilot PV project in Oman
Omani Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with US solar company Astonfield to install a pilot 303kW solar PV project in Oman’s Al Mazyunah state. Local firm Multitech will be involved in the installation, which should begin commercial operation in mid-2014.
RAECO‘s PPA will run for 20 years.
K.A.Care to tap German knowhow
Saudi Arabia’s renewable and nuclear energy agency
K.A.CARE is to collaborate with Germany’s Fraunhofer ISE.
Research and development will be carried out in a wide range of areas, including PV and solar thermal technology, energy storage, grid integration and design, water desalination, solar and renewable energy-efficient cooling as well as efficient building. Standardized performance and reliability testing and certification will also be a major focus.
GCC countries to co-ordinate solar efforts
In an effort to promote transnational co-operation, the Saudi Arabia Solar Industry Association has launched the Solar GCC Alliance that will seek to foster co- operation between solar players in the six member states of the Gulf Co-operation Council – Saudi, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Bahrain. It plans to invite the solar industries of Jordan and Morocco to join.
Utico seeks interest in Ras Al Khaimah project
Utico Middle East has called for pre-qualifications for a 40MW solar power development project in Ras Al Khaimah. The project, the first of its kind in the UAE, will provide power to a 100,000 cubic metres/day desalination plant, for which tenders are now closed, as well as provide power to the grid. Utico is the largest full service private utility company in the UAE.

an agreement to build a 110kW pilot solar power plant in Dubai. The state-owned utility has signed a memorandum of understanding with Swedish energy technology company Cleanergy and construction firm Al-Futtaim Carillion to build the Stirling Engine Concentrated
Solar Power (CSP) plant. The project will provide valuable understanding of how CSP technology performs in the Dubai climate.
Russian deal for Jordan nuclear energy
The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) is to sign a deal with the Russian Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (Rosatom) in mid-February to develop its first nuclear plant. Jordan announced in October 2013 that it would construct twin 1000-megawatt reactors in the Qusayr Amra region, east of the capital Amman. State-owned Rosatom has been contracted to construct the reactors by 202, under a build-own-operate basis. The Russian company will take on 49 per cent of the plants’ $10 billion construction and operation costs, with the Jordanian government contributing 51 per cent and retaining a majority share in the plants.
Dubai Solar Park generating
The first phase of Dubai’s $3.3bn Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park is generating to the grid. The 13MW solar PV plant is the biggest of its type in the region. The facility, built by US company First Solar, is expected to generate 24 million kw of power ever year.
The solar park is being implemented by Dubai’s Supreme Council of Energy (SCE) and managed and operated by DEWA, as part of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030. It will eventually cover 40 sq km and generate 1GW to the national grid using both
PV and solar thermal technology.
MENA region set to grow seven per cent annually by 2020
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), economic development, industrialisation, and a surge in population are major reasons for the increasing demand for electricity, and the result is countries investing in renewable energy, in particular solar power, to diversify power supply. The report: “MENA’s electric power supplies to 2020” was published just ahead of Middle East Electricity. Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, organisers of Middle East Electricity, says: “One of the key drivers of the surging power demand in the MENA region is due to rapid population growth.”
Future Generation Award
Organisers of Middle East Electricity, Informa Energy Group, are proud to introduce a new competition – Future Generation, which is open to undergraduate engineering students in the UAE. Students were asked to come up with innovative solutions in alternative energy, energy efficiency or energy conservation, and their ideas will be presented at Middle East Electricity. The designs will be on display at the Future Generation stand located in Sheikh Maktoum Hall, and visitors will be able to vote for their favourite. A prestigious award will be presented to the winner on Thursday 13 February at 2:00pm in the Conference room in Sheikh Maktoum Hall. Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, says: “As the organisers of one the world’s leading energy events we are committed to investing in the future of the energy industry and are proud to introduce the Future Generation competition.”
