Geyer Clinches Second Straight NCGA Player of the Year Award

BEN GEYER needed just fi ve tour- naments to defend his NCGA Player of the Year title. And what a fi ve tournaments

they were. Geyer began his defense with a win at the amateurgolf.com Wine Country Cup in January. After a second-place fi nish in March at the amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Ama- teur, he made it to match play at the California State Amateur in June. Geyer, who recently completed

Ben Geyer

his collegiate career at St. Mary’s, was knocked out in the fi rst round of

match play—but he would not be beat again in NCGA play. Geyer crushed the fi eld at the NCGA Amateur Stroke

Play Championship in July, defending his title with a nine- stroke victory at 11 under that also tied the event’s scoring record. The win made Geyer the fi rst back-to-back winner of the Stroke Play Championship in 54 years. Geyer chased more history at the NCGA Match Play

Championship in August. Admitting that he was motivated to discover that no one had won both the NCGA Match Play and Stroke Play championships in the same season since John Lotz in 1962, Geyer qualifi ed as the No. 13 seed, but only reached the 18th hole once in his fi ve matches. Geyer capped off his dominating summer with a 5-and-4

win over Cal’s Andrew Morgan in the championship match. “To (win both events) is really special, and a nice way to

go out,” said Geyer, who soon turned professional. Geyer entered pre-qualifying for Q-School at the end of

August, but tied for 57th out of 74 players at San Juan Oaks. Geyer beat out California State Amateur champion

Cory McElyea in the season-long points race, 1,570-1,495. Santa Cruz’s McElyea, a senior at University of San Fran- cisco, won the State Amateur the week after competing in the U.S. Open at Merion. McElyea capped an incredible June by also winning the Monterey City Amateur. Monterey’s Nick Moore fi nished third at 1,394 points

in 10 events, collecting his fi rst two NCGA majors this year. Moore won the NCGA Public Links in April, and the NCGA Valley Amateur Championship in September. Moore also qualifi ed for the U.S. Public Links, won the Salinas City Match Play, and reached the quarterfi nals of the California State Amateur. Austin Roberts fi nished fourth (1,240) and Matt Cohn

took fi fth (1,141). 18 / NCGA.ORG / WINTER 2014 Jim Knoll

Knoll Rolls to Third-Straight Senior Player of the Year Award

JIM KNOLL is on a roll. Not only did he win a record third-straight Senior Player of the Year title, but he set a record by collecting 3,006 points. Knoll was the previous record holder by earning 2,726 points in 2011. Knoll has three of the top four points totals of all time. Knoll got his record-year in

2012-13 by reaching the semifi nals of

the 2012 U.S. Senior Amateur last October. A month later, he tied for sec-

ond at the California Senior Amateur. Knoll won six tournaments worth at least 100 points, including 200-pointers at the Merced County Senior and the Sacra- mento City Senior. For the year, Knoll played in 27 events, beating out four- time NCGA Player of the Year Casey Boyns, 3,006-2,642. Boyns played 21 events, highlighted by wins at the Senior

State Amateur, the NCGA Senior Ama- teur Match Play and Monterey City Senior. Gary Vanier fi nished third with 2,253 points in 13 events, while capturing three NCGA majors—the Senior Championship,

the Senior Valley Championship, and the Senior Four-Ball Championship. Vanier, the 2006 Senior Player of the Year, also won the San Francisco Senior City and the Alameda Commuters Senior Championship. Knoll got a head start on his fourth-straight Senior

Player of the Year title by collecting his fi rst CGA State Senior title by two strokes over Vanier at San Gabriel CC in November.
