Software Update

SmartCAMcnc (Springfi eld, OR) on Dec. 12 announced its updated SmartCAM v2014 release that delivers a rede- signed and improved user interface that assists in usability, ease of learning and user effi ciency, plus additional milling

process modeling, toolpath verifi cation and geometry mod- eling improvements.

SmartCAM v2014 introduces extensive user interface updates that give the product a more modern look and feel while also making it easier to learn and use. Improvements to the milling processes increase toolpath reliability and effi ciency, and reduce the number of steps required to re-machine remain- ing material and generate wireframe profi ling toolpath. The ShowCut and ShowPath toolpath verifi cation modules have been enhanced to make better use of standard tooling by providing improved visualization of turning-tool holders, and allowing milling-tool holders to be used with parametrically defi ned tools. New collision-reporting and holder-checking capabilities also assist users in fi nding potential problems.

Acquisitions Increase your capabilities with multi-tasking machining.

The FVL-1250VTC is perfect for heavy-duty turning applications. And with the optional live tooling function and the series offers additional flexible machining capabilities to make more complex workpieces with one machine.

The cross-rail elevation system uses two large ballscrews for positioning and can be locked in any position with four independent hydraulic break systems. Result: The spindle RAM is able to more closely approach a workpiece, thus eliminating an overhang problem.

The unique patent lock mechanism has eight hydraulic locking cylinders with curvic coupling to assure the turning holder is perfectly stationary on RAM. You get highly rigidity without vibration or cutting chatter. Plus no transfer of stress on the RAM spindle bearings, which substantially prolongs spindle life.

It’s powerful. The enormous 60HP FANUC digital spindle motor, with a two-speed gearbox, generates up to 11,461Nm of torque in lower 37rpm. The optional Live Tooling models can easily handle up to M30 tap or 50mm drill with tough material.

CAD/CAM and PLM developer PTC (Needham, MA) announced Dec. 30 that it had acquired ThingWorx (Chester County, PA), a developer of applica- tions for the Internet of Things (IoT), for approximately $112 million, plus a pos- sible earn-out of up to $18 million. PTC will use ThingWorx to speed creation of high-value IoT applications for predictive maintenance and system monitoring. The acquisition is expected to add more than $10 million of revenue in the next 12 months, with $5 million to $7 million of revenue in fi scal year 2014. As a result of cost synergies and investment plans for ThingWorx, PTC still expects FY14 non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.00 to $2.10. PTC drew $110 million from its credit facility to fi nance the transaction. ME
