HHS launches Meaningful Consent site

The U.S. Department of Health and Hu- man Services (HHS) launched Meaning- ful Consent, www.HealthIT.gov/mean ingfulconsent, an online resource to help physicians effectively engage patients in choosing how they want their electronic health information shared. The site ad- dresses the laws and policies related to health information exchange (HIE) and includes strategies and tools to engage and educate patients.

The Meaningful Consent site features

lessons learned, videos, and customiz- able tools from the eConsent pilot proj- ect completed by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Infor- mation Technology (ONC) last March. The pilot project tested the use of tab- let computers to inform patients about available options when they consider whether to electronically share their health information through an HIE. More patients and physicians are us- ing technology to manage health care and share health information, including electronic health records and HIE servic- es. The Meaningful Consent site builds on 2011 recommendations from ONC’s Health Information Technology Policy Committee, which called on ONC to in- form, collect, and evaluate the informa- tion patients need to make an informed choice about electronic exchange of their health information.

HHS encourages communication and education of patients in many areas, in- cluding electronically receiving and shar- ing their health information. HHS says adequately informing patients of these new models for exchange and letting patients choose whether to participate is one means of ensuring patients trust these technologies. n
