Hard Hats for Little Heads: 20 years of giving
TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads (www
.texmed.org/hardhats) bicycle helmet giveaway program is celebrating a huge milestone in 2014 — its 20th birthday. “Hard Hats gives physicians an oppor- tunity to get out of their office and into the community to educate children and adults about injury prevention,” Larry Driver, MD, Houston, told Texas Medi- cine in 2011. Hard Hats for Little Heads was the
brainchild of Dr. Driver in 1994. He was living in San Angelo when a young neighbor fell off her bike and suffered a concussion. She was not wearing a bi- cycle helmet. He knew a helmet could have prevented her injury and went to work to create a bike helmet giveaway program so he and his physician col- leagues could prevent childhood brain injuries.
San Angelo physicians, with the help of the local police department, gave away the program’s first 500 helmets. Since then, TMA has given away more than 165,000 helmets through Hard Hats for Little Heads. In 2014, Hard Hats wants to reach another milestone — 200,000 helmets given away in 20 years. We need your help. Sponsor a helmet giveaway in your community. It’s easy. When you purchase 50 helmets, TMA provides another 50 helmets at no charge. And, the more helmets you purchase, the more free helmets you receive (see www.texmed .org/
Template.aspx?id=26013#Match). TMA family members — physicians, county medical societies, medical stu- dents, and TMA Alliance members — can sponsor events. TMA provides everything you need for your event, from the helmets to publicity materials to promotional and educational materials. Here are the three steps you need to take:
1. Find a venue to give helmets: a com- munity event, school, or health fair. Or come up with your own event idea. Just log on to the TMA website at
http://bit.ly/1elQrW4.
2. Order your helmets and supplies from TMA four to six weeks in advance.
3. Secure TMA volunteers to fit the hel- mets at your event.
Plan your event today. Three great
times are coming up to build an event around:
• March: Brain Injury Awareness Month;
• April: Texas Child Safety Month; and • May: Bike Month.
To receive an order packet or find
out more about bringing an event to your community, email Tammy Wishard, TMA’s outreach coordinator, at tammy .
wishard@texmed.org, or call (800) 880- 1300, ext. 1470, or (512) 370-1470.
Hard Hats for Little Heads is made pos- sible through a grant from the TMA Foun- dation thanks to top donors — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Prudential, and two anonymous foundations — and gen- erous gifts from physicians and their fami- lies and friends of medicine.

Today, more than 50 percent of physi- cians across the country are employed — either by a hospital or practice group. Those who wish to remain independent are now joining associations to help ne- gotiate better payer reimbursements or lower costs for certain services.
