Health for Life initiative that CMS ini- tially funded in 2010. This initiative has helped bring diabetes self-management education to high-risk populations in tar- geted areas of Texas. The initial community beneficiaries for the program are Brownsville and Alamo, where it partnered with Proyecto Juan Diego and the Senior Community Outreach Services, Inc. They have served more than 400 clients to date. ¡Adelante! participants complete 6 to 12 weeks of diabetes education in a group format, led by a local bilingual fa- cilitator. Classes include instructions on proper self-monitoring, healthy eating, and exercise. Participants also receive useful tools for self-monitoring and health management, such as glucom- eters and test strips, water bottles, and Latino-style diabetes-friendly cookbooks. Each participant’s blood work is done
pre- and post-class to gauge improve- ment in health during the term of the
classes and as clinical data to evaluate longer-term improvements in outcomes. For more information on the TMF
Foundation or to have your community considered as a future stop for the ¡Ad- elante! program, email traci.whitney@

Texas RECs offer free help to some Medicaid specialists
A grant from Texas Medicaid now allows the four Texas regional extension centers (RECs) to help physicians participating in the Medicaid electronic health record (EHR) meaningful use incentive pro- gram. Physicians with at least 30 per- cent Medicaid volume can receive up to $63,750 in incentives over six years. Medicaid is focusing on numerous health priorities and as a result is ex-
tending EHR consulting help to these specialists: cardiologists, endocrinolo- gists, psychiatrists, and pulmonologists. To receive the free consulting, the physician must be eligible for the Medic- aid EHR incentive program and have not yet attested to meaningful use. The RECs can help with EHR selec-
tion, workflow optimization with the EHR, meeting the meaningful use mea- sures (including the security risk assess- ment), and attesting to meaningful use to receive the incentives. For information about the Texas RECs, check out TMA’s REC Resource Center at
www.texmed.org/Rec. A REC locator tool can help you determine which REC serves your area.
If you have other questions about EHRs or other health information tech- nology issues, contact TMA’s Health Information Technology Department by telephone at (800) 880-5720 or by email at
