popularity in recent years. Around half the total exhibition area of 15,000m² is dedicated to electronics of one form or another, and the show now attracts exhibitors from all over the world. But despite this growth, the fundamental principle of the show has remained res- olutely constant. “Southern Electronics is still aimed mainly at the small to medium size busi- nesses that make up the backbone of the UK electronics sector,” says

SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING & ELECTRONICS is returning to FIVE, Farnborough, on February 12th and 13th 2014, with the promise of an even greater number of exhibitors than last year’s record-breaking event. Commenting on the previous year’s event, the show organisers advise that 2013 brought together around 700 exhibitors from just about every sector of engineering and manufacturing. It claims the continuing resurgence of UK plc. and the growth of the show’s popu- larity is likely to see those numbers rise to around 800 for 2014, making it considerably larger than any other elec- tronics show in the UK. The rate of growth is claimed to have taken a remarkable upswing following the show’s relocation to the FIVE Inter- national Exhibition centre, alongside Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, in 2008. Co-located with the Southern Manufacturing and Auto Aero shows, Southern Electronics has exploded in

Director, Phil Valentine. “It is these providers of high-value engineering expertise that provide the essential infra- structure supporting industries vital to the UK economy, such as aerospace, automotive, marine, defence, medical technology and high-tech manufacturing. The format of Southern Electronics suits these kinds of businesses very well.” Despite its considerable success, the

organisers advise that they have kept stand prices comparatively low, encour- aging an incredible range of vendors to participate. Virtually every facet UK electronics

under one roof, making it feasible for visitors to meet an impressive range of equipment and service providers in just a couple of hours.

The show enjoys an incredible degree of support from its regular exhibitors, with most coming back every year. “Consistency is an essential attribute of the show,” adds Valentine. “Visitors need to be confident that they're going to see enough value to warrant time out

from their normal working routine.” With so many well-known companies com- ing back every year, there’s little chance of disappointment there. “For equipment manufacturers, 2014 also looks to potentially be the most lucrative for many years: Phil Valentine comments: “The strengthening eco- nomic conditions and recent capital equipment purchase tax breaks mean that many UK companies are once again investing in up-to-date technologies and manufacturing equipment, and as a result we are seeing a significant surge in visitor interest.”

While the big names such as Blundell

Production Equipment, RS Components, Spirit Circuits, Eurotech, Wavemar Elec- tronics, Briton EMS and many more will return for 2014, for some, Southern Electronics 2014 will be their first. However it’s more than just the size of Southern Manufacturing & Electronics that continues to draw newcomers. 2013 saw the launch of the Northern Manufacturing & Electronics Show to wide-spread praise. Valentine com- ments: “With the launch of Northern Electronics we have established a new model for electronics shows in the UK - a credible, national-scale event that comes to the visitor, rather than the other way around.” Many exhibitors are participating in both events, finding it a very cost effective way of building both national profile and grass- roots business in new territories. For visitors, a readily accessible

regional venue offering free onsite car parking and easy access by public transport, enables short visits to be incorporated into a normal working day. Some 8,500 of them are expected to make the trip to Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2014. Along with the hard- ware on display, the event also offers an opportunity to catch presentations from leading industry authorities during the show’s two days of free technical semi- nars running in two lecture theatres. The ever-popular free technical semi- nar programme will touch on many aspects of electronics and commerce, from product design, to updates on the EU’s legislative environment and a look at the latest trends in business manage- ment. A full list of seminars is available at: www.industrysouth.co.uk, and pre- registration is highly recommended. Entry to all areas of Southern Manu- facturing & Electronics and Auto Aero, and the seminar programmes, are completely free. equipment over the last year, putting us in a strong position to offer new customers a profes- sional, flexible and competitive alternative to off- shore manufacturing. We look forward to discussing the diverse range of manufacturing requirements with new and existing customers.” The upgraded WPS surface mount line can manufacture boards up to 3m by 1.3m, for any application including the growing opportunity in retail displays, LED lighting and digital signage. The company claims, it is the first line in the country that can manufacture such long boards fully automatically, including the critical screen printing stage. The line can also be used to manu- facture boards of more standard dimensions. The investment in 2013 increases WPS assembly capacity to 140,000 components per hour. WPS Stand D78
