In brief Consortium chosen for Goiânia LR PPP
OBILIDADE Anhanguera, a consortium of Odebrecht Transport (90%) and Brazilian bus operators (10%), has been selected as preferred bidder for the 35-year PPP concession to build and operate the first light rail line in the Brazilian city of Goiânia.

The 13.5km line will run east-west across the city along Anhanguera Avenue with 12

project is Reais 1.3bn ($US 558m), with Reais 805m coming from the Goiás state government and Odebrecht Transport providing the remaining Reais 500m. Construction is expected to

Valenciennes LRT reaches Vieux Condé F

Mr Mike Brown, London Underground (LU) managing director, announced on November 21 that 24-hour operation will be introduced at weekends on five Underground lines from 2015.
line through Fresnes sur Escaut to reach Vieux Condé. The 22-station line is single- track between Anzin and Vieux Condé, with passing loops at stations. Commercial services are due to begin on February 24, with trams running at 10-minute intervals at peak times. The line will be operated by a fleet of 33m-long Alstom Citadis 302 low-floor LRVs.
London plans 24-hour Tube operation
LU also has plans to close all of its remaining ticket offices on the grounds that fewer than 3% of all Tube journeys now involve a visit to a ticket office. The proposals are expected to generate savings of around £50m per year.
Athens
The 1.4km western extension of Athens metro Line 3 from Egaleo to Aghia Marina was officially opened on December 14 by Greece’s deputy minister of infrastructure, transport, and networks Mr Michalis Papadopolous. The ƒ250m project included the construction of a new 86,000m2 depot at Eleonas, and 382-space park-and-ride station at Aghia Marina.
Avignon
The city’s planned ƒ250m two-line light rail network was granted public utility status on November 23, which should allow construction to begin by the end of this year. The 9.2km Line A from Ile Piot to Lac Le Pontet and 5.3km Line B from Horloge to St Charmand are due to be commissioned in late-2016.
Bangkok
The 3km western extension of the BTS Skytrain Silom Line from Talat Phlu to Bang Wa in the district of Phasi Charoen was inaugurated on December 5. The extension is expected carry more than 70,000 passengers per day and takes the total length of the Silom Line to 14.5km.
Chicago
Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is planning to invest $US 492 in the modernisation of the Blue Line O’Hare Branch, which links the city’s main international airport with the city centre. The project includes track and station improvements on the 20.1km section of the line between Grand and Cumberland stations, eliminating speed restrictions, as well as upgrading of signalling systems between Jefferson Park and O’Hare.
Graz
Pesa LRVs delivered to Sofia: The first of 20 Swing 122NaSF low-floor LRVs being supplied by Pesa Bydgoszcz, Poland, to the city of Sofia arrived in the Bulgarian capital on November 29. Following upgrading of infrastructure, the 30m-long 1009mm-gauge vehicles are due to enter service on Line 7. The remainder of the fleet is due to be delivered by this spring.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a ƒ95m loan agreement with the municipal government which will finance investment in the light rail network in Austria’s second-largest city. The loan will be used to acquire 35 new LRVs, and will also fund the
1km extension of Line 7 to Graz Medical University, which is due to open in October 2016.
Lyon
Transport authority Sytral celebrated the completion of the second metro tunnel under the river Rhône on December 11 with the inauguration of the ƒ222m southern extension of Line B from Stade de Gerland to Oullins mainline station in the district of La Saulaie. The 1.8km one-station extension includes a 300km section of single-bore double-track tunnel beneath the river.
Milan
Metro operator ATM has commissioned a new ƒ11.5m centralised traffic control centre, which supervises the operation of all lines except the driverless Line 5. Developed by ATM, Alstom, and IBM, the centre
consolidates the operations of three existing traffic control centres at a single location covering 83.5 route-km and 1650 train movements per day.
Odense
The Danish government has allocated ƒ147m towards the city’s planned 14.4km light rail line in its 2014 state budget. The ƒ321m project is due to be completed in 2020.
Salt Lake City
Utah Transit Authority welcomed the first passengers to its S-Line tram line on December 7. Full commercial services began the following day on the 3.2km line, which runs east from an interchange with the Trax light rail Red, Blue at Green lines at Central Pointe to serve South Salt Lake, Sugarmont, and Fairmont.
Vienna
Wiener Linien published a tender on December 6 for a contract to supply up to 156 low-floor LRVs, with an option for a further 30 vehicles. The contract will include 24 years maintenance, and the contractor must employ Wiener Linien staff and facilities. IRJ
