antech Ventilation, manufacturer and supplier of ventilation equip- ment throughout Ireland, has supplied a number of air han- dling units for use in the recently refurbished Biotech Building of Trinity College Dublin. The company, which is part of the Elta Group, sup- plied a total of 12 Komfovent air han- dling units, along with three fan units from sister company Elta Fans. Komfovent units help create and maintain healthy indoor climates and facilitate energy efficiency savings. Of the 12, BMS-interfaced, prewired air handling units supplied to Trinity College, 11 were Komfovent Verso models. Nine units incorporated high efficiency plate heat exchangers to reclaim heat from expelled air - and two were air supply only.
Research and teaching Trinity College boasts a four hundred year old tradition of scholarship and is recognised as one of the great uni- versities of the world. The College is committed to excellence in both research and teaching. Opened in May 1994, the university’s Biotech
Building is a 35,000 square metre facility spread over 11 floors – three of which are underground. Nearly one third of the total floorspace is com- mercially leased, leaving a further 24,000 square metres for the academic research and teaching which houses three Trinity Centres of Research Excellence: Immunotherapeutics, Medical Devices and Cancer Drug Discovery. The building comprises multiple research and support areas including; computer rooms, lecture theatres, cell offices, seminar rooms, instrument bay, dry and wet laborato- ries and research rooms.

VERSO units are silent in operation with low energy consumption and are available in nine sizes for airflows from 1,000 m³/h to 34,000 m³/h, as supply only air units or with heat recovery. For convenience and sim- plicity of installation, heaters, coolers and dampers are mounted outside the units as separate sections. All sections are compact and pass easily through standard 900mm wide door openings. This gives flexibility in gaining access for mounting and reduces the installa- tion area. The units can be mounted indoors and out, are completely prewired and have integrated auto- matic control, thus keeping down on- site installation costs. The one remaining air handling unit supplied to the College was a REGO model, part of the Komfovent standardised KOM- PAKT series, which feature an integral rotary heat exchanger. The units sup- plied by Elta Fans were all Quietflow centrifugal box fans; two SQS models and one SQT unit.
The units are designed to keep on-site installation costs down (below)
Homework and research results in pumping success story
omework has paid off for dairy farmer James Kennedy in Co Tipperary, where a longshaft slurry pump and mixer from Landia have completed their first five years of service. The 5” 18.5 kW longshaft Landia unit consistently pumps slurry at the farm in Bawn near Nenagh from a 3m deep channel-fed reception pit to a 6m above-ground pre-cast concrete store 10m away. The slurry in the concrete store (19m dia x 6m high) is then mixed by an 18.5 kW submersible Landia mixer.

“This is such a good system - and from day one I’ve had nothing but total support and help from Landia,” said Kennedy. Although he gained valuable experience at dairy farms during an agricultural college placement in Denmark, when it later came time to purchase his slurry pump and mixer, Kennedy still wanted to see working equipment in action. His research included a trip to a dairy farm in Shropshire, where he saw what Landia’s pumps and mixers could do. “The dairy farmer clearly had every confidence in his pump and
mixer,” said Kennedy. “His slurry process was very effective – and he’d never had a breakdown or blockage – to the point that he said he never really has to think about it. The Landia slurry pump and mixer just keep on working.” These days Landia are represented in Ireland exclusively by DPS of
Newtownards, but at the time they undertook the full installation for Kennedy. He continued: “During routine servicing and the whole instal- lation, what has impressed me most is that Landia’s sales team as well as their engineers are totally supportive, knowledgeable and if neces- sary, ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. I can safely say that just like their pumps and mixers, Landia’s service has been fantastic.” Landia T: +44 (0)1948 661200
