Brunei implements Shariah The sultan of Brunei announced that beginning in April 2014 he will rule his oil-rich Islamic country accord- ing to Shariah laws, including death by stoning for adultery, the amputa- tion of limbs for theft, and flogging for alcohol consumption and abortion. Brunei is on the northwest edge of Borneo island in the South China Sea. Its 416,000 population is 67 percent Muslim and ethnic Malay. The laws and punishments apply only to the Sunni Muslim majority in the country.
Muslims want holidays In Montgomery County, Md., schools are closed for Christmas, Good Friday and the Monday after Easter, as well as the Jewish holi- days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For 10 years Muslims there have lobbied for school closures on the holidays of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) and Eid al-Fitr (Feast of Breaking the Fast). District guide- lines allow Muslim students to take excused absences on Eid days, but the county’s board of education has resisted making them official holi- days, arguing that religion can’t be cited as a reason to close school.

Tebartz-van Elst, who wasn’t removed from office, is accused of spending 31 million euros ($43 mil- lion) in church funds on a luxury resi- dence.
