Concrete storage tanks for reservoirs

THAMES WATER WORDS f is using pre-cast concrete storage tanks to build two new underground water storage reservoirs in Reading.

The pre-cast concrete storage tanks, which will be manufactured elsewhere and constructed on site, will hold 14.6Ml of water between them.

Construction is now underway and the tanks will be sited underneath the park in Elm Lane and next to the existing Earley reservoir. They will act as holding

tanks on the water supply network, ensuring there is enough treated water in the right place for busy times of the day, such as first thing in the morning when people are using showers.

Thames says that the fully-

covered tanks will provide drinking water for the growing population in the surrounding area over the next 30 years.

David Chopping, Earley ward councillor, said: “This reservoir should see the high quality of water maintained, even as demand increases. Wokingham Borough Council and Earley Town Council have been able to work with Thames Water to see that the environmental impact of this reservoir is minimised and that when the reservoir is completed that the environment will be returned to its original condition.

“We need improved services and this is the right way forward, with interested parties co-operating in a reasonable way.”

Getting tough on WRAS-compliant

The client required WRAS- compliant storage to ensure it is suitable for potable water, and that it featured insulated steel housing and white in col- our. Tuffa was able to adapt its 1,400VW Water Tank model with ease to suit the cli- ent’s given specification. The system combined of a pump suitable for water, a tubular heater and inlet and outlet connections.

A prototype was supplied and successfully underwent testing, which resulted in a further batch being ordered with more to follow. The

client has already

placed consequent orders with Tuffa.

“It is our willingness to work with our customers, along with our capability and innovative product designs that allow us to be one step ahead

competition.

This particular order was placed by the client simply be- cause Tuffa are an approach- able, professional family run company and are always ac- commodating to the custom- er. We aim to provide a com- plete solution to any customer requirements, no matter how big or small.” says a Tuffa spokesperson.

Tuffa’s standard water tank range is available in vary- ing capacities from 1,350l to 20,000l in a single unit, but can also be interlinked to obtain larger capacities, and adapted accordingly. Stand- ard models are fully ventilat- ed with an access/inspection point and drain point.
