Waterproofing membrane protects shaft
A THAMES Water improvement programme on London’s sewer system has seen Stirling Lloyd’s Integritank HF waterproofing membrane used to protect the Lee Tunnel Beckton Pumping Shaft, one of the principal and most imposing structures on the project. One of a number of large tunnels carrying existing wastewater away to a water treatment works, Lee Tunnel is a key part of this Thames Tideway project and the first phase of sewer system improvements that will help prevent combined discharges of stormwater and sewage reaching the River Thames and lower River Lee.
At 82m deep and 42m wide, the Beckton Pumping Shaft is the largest shaft in the project, enabling pumping of effluent from the Lee Tunnel itself.

Contractors sign up to cut carbon

A NUMBER of contractors involved in the water sector have joined forces with Anglian Water, government ministers and other industry leaders to cut carbon in infrastructure as part of an initiative that could save as much as 24Mt of carbon and £1.46B a year by 2050. Companies including Clancy Docwra, Galliford Try, Carillion, Balfour Beatty and Skanska signed the initiative at the launch of the Infrastructure Carbon Review last month. Infrastructure and related industries account for half of the UK’s current carbon emissions, and cutting the amount of materials consumed in construction and using existing resources more efficiently will reduce cost as well as carbon. AMK picked for £177M Deephams upgrade
AMK, THE joint venture between AECOM, Murphy and Kier, is the successful contractor appointed by Thames Water for the £177M rebuild of Deephams Sewage Treatment Works. The JV had been battling another joint venture, Tamesis, for the contract. This appointment of AMK represents a key milestone in Thames’ Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement process and an important step towards upgrading Deephams to meet tighter environmental standards, improving the water quality of London’s River Lee and reducing odour.
Lawrence Gosden, Thames Water’s asset director, said: “We believe our ECI process has resulted in the best possible solution for the upgrade, and after close competition between two very high calibre bidders we’re very pleased to announce
the appointment of AMK. “This project represents our approach to delivering best value for our customers − working innovatively, sustainably, and in collaboration with our contractors.”
Jo Streeten, AMK project director said: “Upgrading Deephams presents a number of interesting challenges, not least the need to construct new treatment facilities on a site with limited space, while maintaining the current operation. Working within Thames Water’s ECI process has allowed us to understand these challenges early-on and develop a solution that meets them in the most efficient way.”
