CONTRIBUTOR In The Know with Gostelow

Twitter is going mad ahead of this year’s opening ILTM Forum in Cannes on December 2nd, 2013, says Senior Exhibition Director, Alison Gilmore. As soon as the whole programme was announced, service specialist Holly Stiel tweeted ‘honoured to be opening speaker’. Holly says for her, luxury is having everything taken care of (want to know her own favourite hotels? Wait for the Opening Forum but one, I can reveal, is The Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton SC).

Mary Gostelow is arguably one of the top global travellers of today - she is on the road, or more accurately in beds of luxury hotels and resorts - at least 300 days a year. She has been to so many countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbawe, that she has given up counting… As well as her daily www.girlahead.com travelogue, she owns and produces the monthly market intelligence newsletter, Gostelow Report, essential adrenalin for decision- makers since 1992. She is regular columnist in Elite Traveler, Elite Traveler Asia, and HOTELS magazine, and she is strategic advisor for Hotel Insider www.hotelinsider.com

At ILTM there are many evolutions. As well as a better- than-ever Opening Forum, a new section, Debutants, will show up-and-coming projects. On The Peninsula stand, look out for its Paris beauty, now scheduled to open August 1st, 2014 - it will excite musicologists and historians. In a previous incarnation, as The Majestic, this is where George Gershwin wrote An American in Paris, in 1928, on a commission from the New York Philharmonic. This is where too, in 1973, Henry Kissinger, then US National Security Advisor, signed the Paris Peace Accords. And this will be, as always, an example of the detailed perfection that The Peninsula always puts into its hotels (The Peninsula COO Peter Borer, by the way, is current HOTELS magazine’s Corporate Hotelier of the year).

Ecuador’s Galapagos will be highlighted by Silversea, whose second expedition ship is based there permanently. Mexico will be making a big stand - it is the only country in The Americas to have as many as 32 UNESCO-accredited cultural sites, and the 714,566-hectare El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is also a Humanity World Heritage site. Will there be a verbal buzz among delegates about what is going to happen in Peru’s Pacaya Samiria National Forest? Will sustainability-minded buyers home-in on Australia’s Wolgan Luxury Lodges, where guests can work alongside expert field guides? From conservation to the virtual world, Cannes 2013 is ahead of the pack. Forum speaker Facebook’s Global Head of Travel, Lee McCabe will talk about friends’ wisdom, combined with technology, being essential in luxury travel planning. Yaffa Assouline will preach that luxury is the new religion.
