CONTRIBUTOR Quality, not quantity
If we are to believe the prognoses made by trend scouts, the upswing in international travel is going to continue. Improved and increasingly sophisticated technology is constantly making it easier for prospective travellers to obtain information and book all kinds of travel at the press of a button.
Simone Dressler, Editor in Chief, Connoisseur Circle
At the same time, however, we are struck by a certain phenomenon: today, more than before, travellers are willing to dig deep into their pockets for travel at the most beautiful time of year. Combined with this is a trend to take more frequent but shorter trips in the year, and to do so with more awareness. This can be seen in the fact that today’s traveller is no longer so eager to set out on a trip to artificial holiday destinations, but is rather looking more and more for authenticity.

SPECIAL
In response to this demand, many providers have begun to design tour offers quite out of the ordinary, special trips to cities of cultural interest, or sustainable bush & beach arrangements. Particular focus is now being placed on regional experience, whether in the form of an exchange or, even, by putting oneself to work with the local population. Thus, for example, on islands in the Indian Ocean it is now possible to sponsor or ‘adopt’ coral or sea turtles; or, in the Mediterranean region, with local assistance and regional produce, one can learn to cook according to traditional recipes. This is all an enrichment that the modern traveller can take home with him/her, and, at the same time, a guarantee that what has been experienced will continue to survive. Because, in a globalised world, preserving the diversity of flora and fauna or ensuring the survival of ethnic identities will only grow in importance if we are to respect sustainability in our efforts to extend our travel horizons. Authentic experience is therefore becoming increasingly a motivation for travel, and the willingness to invest the money for it is also increasing accordingly. Today’s customer booking luxury has long since lost interest in golden water faucets, and, similarly, providers in the luxury travel industry have also matured. If trends in travel continue to develop in this direction, it will soon be possible to report more on the extent to which the ‘right kind of tourism’ can contribute to preserving resources. So today’s customer has come of age.
