TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Developing future leaders
Sally Averill, IE Representative for UK & Ireland, explains more about the MBA programmes at IE Business School in Madrid and their relevance to public sector leaders.
In
2001, the top-ranked IE Business School started developing a portfolio of MBA programmes that allows busy executives to undertake a rigorous, interactive, and transformational
MBA program without
taking a break from their current job or responsibilities.
The objective was to help future leaders expand their network, explore the increasingly complex forces shaping our world and provide practical solutions for real problems that may arise in any type of company or institution. The result is a part-time blended methodology that combines a series of short, intensive face-to-face periods with intermittent online study. Participants are able to immediately apply the insights obtained during the programmes to their jobs, fostering rapid assimilation and deeper learning.
Residential weeks take place around the globe, from Cape Town to Madrid to Singapore, depending on the specific programme of choice, and are designed to allow participants to develop meaningful bonds with their classmates and faculty. Comprised of workshops, company visits, networking activities and classroom time,
residential weeks are an essential component of the blended program experience. Participants deepen their personal relationships as well as their understanding of the diverse perspectives being shared.
The online experience
Following their interaction in the classroom, professors and participants transition to a period of online learning. The online courses are taught via asynchronous forums, videoconferences, case study analysis and group assignments. Professors moderate discussions, pose questions, and summarise the global learnings at the end of each week-long session. New content is introduced each week and participants prepare both individually and in teams, integrating knowledge across the various subjects.
Online courses give participants the chance to read, reflect and contribute at their leisure, from any location, around the clock; given the senior profile of the classes, there is ample time for sharing experiences and perspectives among classmates.
Alexis, a lawyer based in Australia and current member of the IE-Brown Executive MBA Class of 2014, describes the online experience as both an enriching and highly relevant way to examine critical topics in the business world with executives across a wide range of industries and cultures, writing: “I have been motivated by the virtual interactions on the forum of my cohort in these past few months. Being a values-based leader is easier in principle than practice…when attention is consumed by the technical detail, it is difficult to see the multiple alternative perspectives.”
Similarly her classmate Carlos, a director in the Spanish automotive industry, sums up the blended advantage: “I am connected the entire day to a learning community of 25 individuals who are spread all over the world. Ideas, hypotheses, simple guesses; all of them are flowing 24/7 in this forum. IE calls it the ‘blended methodology’; I call it the ultimate shared/common learning methodology. Right now, I am convinced that this blended programme allows more participation and better exchange than a regular face-to-face MBA.
“In fact, I’m realising that it’s not just about the learning. Our personalities, opinions, worries, experiences – they all keep coming through in every post. Suddenly, this translates to strengthening the bonds we formed when we met in Providence three long months ago. We have built a strong learning community. Ideas and knowledge just keep blossoming inside it. This blended system… is intense, it is immersive, it is flexible and it supports free exchange and common building of ideas and knowledge. Three months ago, I was wondering if it would be effective. Right now, I can say it’s won me over.”
IE’s groundbreaking methodology delivers an Executive MBA experience tailored to fit the needs of the world’s top global leaders, who will impact society and revolutionise the business landscape of tomorrow.
