Gregory Jolivet of Blowzabella with guest hurdy gurdy player Dylan Cairns.

Faeries, Blowzabella, Lau and a rammed final farewell for Laurel Swift’s Morris Off- spring project with music from Faustus.

As a festival MC (shuffle on stage, bring out the real talent and shuffle off again) my own evenings were predeter- mined elsewhere. It was a genuine thrill to introduce (among others) The Askew Sis- ters, Jason Steel, Melrose Quartet and Steve Turner at Kennaway House where, during the afternoons, our esteemed edi- tor demonstrated his best mother hen impression, nudging living legends Wizz Jones and Shelagh McDonald, and folka- delic groovers like Olivia Chaney, Three Cane Whale, kora-wielding songwriter Will Newsome and Stephanie Hladowski & C Joynes out to feel the love.

The notoriously sweltering Bedford Hotel also staged a strong series of after- noon concerts, including a very warmly received (ha!) Dave Burland, and storming Orcadian duo Saltfishforty (whose Douglas Montgomery staked a strong claim to be considered the most Scottish person in the

Boggart’s Breakfast

world, by walking onstage, on the hottest day of the year, wearing his coat and carry- ing a pint and a nip.)

Out on the streets, I caught Lampliter’s

Tobias Jacob busking the Stones’ Wild Horses, while in the Late Night Extras up at the Bulverton, the English String Band maintained Sidmouth’s fine tradition of silliness with their Monty Python ceilidh, and Toothless Mary (with caller Pete Rees) kept the English ceilidh flame burning for the young crowd. The Unwanted cooked- up an irresistible afternoon Irish/American gumbo, and Paul Downes 60th birthday party gig was a hoot.

Listening to the peerless Dartmoor Pixie Band under cloudless blue skies in the Anchor garden gave me one of those “I could die happy, right now” feelings. I didn’t, so promptly celebrated my contin- ued existence by purchasing a one-row melodeon. Watch out for me in those step dancing sessions, next year.
