Crispy Beer Battered Cod
All three plates offered something deeply pleasing to the palate – the pairing of mini Yorkshire puddings and blue cheese uniting two of my favourite things – but the most impressive, both in presentation and taste, were the slow cooked ribs, which came artfully arranged on newsprint paper on slate, with the creamy cider mayonnaise served in a hollowed lime. The meat, with its crispy coating, fell from the bone, as if it had waited its whole life to collapse, ever so willing, into my eager maw. I could have eaten two more lots. And with three small plates costing only £10, it’s something I will be sure to consider should I return with carnivorous friends in tow.

Speaking of carnivores, the Daddy Violet from the burger menu is a dish not to be undertaken lightly. This meaty mammoth consists of a 6oz patty, topped with a mound of pulled pork, crispy bacon and double cheese, lathered with bbq and burger sauce and topped off with a beer battered pickle. My dining companion was, to his great shame, defeated by this burger behemoth. In this episode of Man vs. Food, food definitely won. Meanwhile, I thoroughly enjoyed my bigger plate (£8, or two for £15) of crispy beer battered cod, with honey glazed chorizo, olives, garlic, cherry tomatoes and paprika – another excellent combination of well-matched, drool-inducing textures and flavours.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, however, we had no room for dessert. The gooey chocolate brownie will have to wait until next time.
The Violet Hour has already made waves with locals and city-dwellers alike for its unpretentious, chilled ambience and excellent and innovative cocktails. It can now be proud to add tasty, handsomely presented, great-value food to its offering.
