Mystic Manor Hong Kong Disneyland
The highlight of the park’s new Mystic Point area, Mystic Manor is Hong Kong Disneyland’s answer to the Haunted Mansion dark ride found in all other Disneyland parks – but with a unique storyline, ride vehicle and a special twist.
Mystic Manor is the home of renowned explorer Lord Henry Mystic and his mischievous monkey companion, Albert. The Lord is a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, which hardcore Disney fans will recognise as the organisation that inspires the theme behind Tower of Terror at Tokyo DisneySea.
Even before guests step inside the new attraction, they are likely to be impressed by its themed facade. The new ride utilises trackless ride vehicles as seen on Pooh’s Hunny Hunt at Tokyo Disneyland and takes guests on a tour of the house to see the many artefacts that Lord Mystic has amassed on his adventures around the world.
At the start of the attraction, Albert is seen playing with an enchanted box that results in all the artefacts coming to life, leading to a crazy journey through the house. Riders are wowed by dazzling visual effects and scenic displays as they travel past paintings that come to life and literally leap out at you, statues that threaten their journey, plants that think you’re dinner and then the wonderful finale of a tornado that rips
apart the very room you’re in. Good job the Monkey King statue comes to life to save the day!
The twist in the tale comes from the fact the ride vehicles plot different routes through the house, encouraging guests to ride multiple times to see all the scenes on offer. The combination of a strong story, a musical score from Danny Elfman, and some of the best visual effects and gags seen in a long time has resulted in arguably the most significant and sensational dark ride to debut in 2013. The opening of Mystic Point this
May, which also includes a themed restaurant, gift shop and a special
stop on the Disneyland Express, completes a major four- year expansion for Hong Kong Disneyland. With the addition of this, Toy Story Land and Grizzly Gulch (with its impressive Big Grizzly Mountain rollercoaster), the park is now 25% bigger than when it opened in 2004.
