DO: Remember that your exhibitor pass also gives you free travel on the city trams, day and night.
DO: Go on the consumer showfloor when it’s getting to max capacity – especially if t-shirts are being chucked to crowds – witness your punters and their fandom close up.
DO: Escape, shortly after… Work out who has off-show meeting spaces. Preferably hotel suites. Ones that have air conditioning, refreshments, and a bit of peace far, far, far away from those lovely fans.
DON’T: Eat sausage for at least two weeks before you depart. There is practically nothing else to eat when you’re there.
DO: Make sure you have paper copies of your schedule, people’s details, everything you need for the day. Don’t rely on wi-fi or that your phone battery will last the day – especially if you forget to charge it the night before after getting back from the pub.
DON’T: Be there on the consumer day unless you need to be. Crazy German teenagers are scarier than you think, especially if you don’t speak German.
DON’T: Get stinking drunk on the first night.
DO: Give yourself a clear time to go home. While at E3 everything shuts at 2am, Cologne offers many more random places to go drinking and party.
DO: Remember to take a picture – yes, a picture – of your room number in case you do not remember when you come back to the hotel.
DON’T: Go to the Spanish bar. You do not want to stay awake until 5am and miss the day after’s meeting
DON’T: Drink too many energy drinks.
DON’T: Venture in the consumer area if you have an hangover. It’s worse than a zombie apocalypse.
DO: Read the floorplans carefully if you have external meetings. It’s easy to get turned around on the first day if you aren’t careful and end up late for your meetings.
DON’T: Think you can just pop out into the consumer hall for 20 minutes to have a look around. It’s a jungle out there and will take you at least 20 minutes to reach anywhere let alone fight through the crowds to get to see anything
