HIEs ready to sign physician practices

One of the greatest promises of health information technology and electronic health records is the ability to securely access and share patient information at the point of care. Currently, 12 health information exchanges (HIEs) in Texas, funded with federal grants, can provide information about patients at the point of care.

Some of this patient information in- cludes lab results, current medications, recent hospitalizations, and radiology reports. Each HIE is developing various services according to the needs in its specific region. It is important that phy- sicians reach out to the HIE in their re-

gion to find out what services are offered and to learn details about participation, including cost. Visit www.hietexas.org/local-hies/

hie-service-areas-and-info for HIE ser- vice area information. The Texas Medical Association has developed a set of ques- tions, available at www.texmed.org/hie, that physicians should ask before joining an HIE. For more information about HIEs or other health information technology is- sues, contact TMA’s Health Information Technology Department by telephone at (800) 880-5720 or by email at HIT@tex med.org. n

Crystal Zuzek is an associate editor of Texas Medicine. You can reach her by telephone at (800) 880-1300, ext. 1385, or (512) 370-1385; by fax at (512) 370-1629; or by email at crystal.zuzek@texmed.org.
