One resident who’s thrilled to have a theater on the grounds is John Gowan, an actor for almost 40 years who heard about the community while living in another nearby rental apartment. “I was by far the oldest person in that building,” he says, “so it’s nice to be here where people of like age and mind are gathered together.” The 69-year-old is as active as it gets, running an art-installation business in addition to his acting endeavors. In his spare time, he goes mountain biking, skiing, rock climbing, and hiking and volunteers at the zoo in Los Angeles.


“I don’t think I’ll ever consider myself retired,” says Gowan. “You don’t have to retire from the acting business as long as they keep hiring you. I’m a member of the Road Theater Co., and with a theater on the ground floor of my building, all I have to do when there’s a reading is walk downstairs.”


New directions
You might have heard of the “half-back” trend, where people who moved to Florida from the Northeast pull up stakes and move halfway back north, perhaps to a mid-Atlantic state such as North Carolina. The Brookings Institution reports Raleigh’s population of 65-and-older folks increased by 60 percent between 2000 and 2010, with the age 55-to-64 demographic surging by a whopping 97 percent.
