“We are the only community that actually requires its residents to participate in the myriad educational offerings we have,” notes Paula Panchuck, the village’s executive director. You might think that would scare off some potential buyers, but when the facility opened in 2000, it took just a few months for its 162 apartments to sell out. Another building that opened in 2003 filled up in a month, as did the latest addition, which was completed in 2006.

“Rather than seeing [the educational requirement] as a burden, residents saw it as a way to continue the active lifestyle that had always been important to them, both in work and leisure,” says Panchuck. “Research tells us that successful aging is all about maintaining connections with others and staying active and stimulated. Here, you can interact with others of like mind while you learn new things.” Panchuck notes being on campus gives residents the option of mingling with younger people. “And it doesn’t matter if they have green hair, 10 tattoos, and five piercings, because they’re not yours,” she quips.

Artisanal retirement
On the opposite side of the country, artistic types now have a community where they can practice their craft right where they live. Calling itself a “senior artists colony,” this rental community, which opened in Burbank, Calif., in 2005, offers residents not only nicely appointed apartments but also common areas boasting art galleries, a library, a resident resource center, and a full-featured performance theater with a stage and piano. A second artists’ community opened recently in North Hollywood.
