Genelec’s SAM (Smart Active Monitor) concept, which includes the 8260A (pictured), is an acoustic calibration solution. The SAM system allows monitors to be controlled with digital networking to enable the building of highly flexible computer controlled systems of monitors. The acoustical features of SAM can be optimised with software calibration tools to suit individual working styles and systems of monitors. One of these tools is AutoCal – Genelec’s acoustic calibration solution that is supplied alongside the manufacturer’s loudspeaker management software package, GLM. Using GLM software and AutoCal a monitor can be turned into the reference it needs to be. This improves performance and helps the user to achieve a flat frequency response at listening position. It also handles phase alignment in between monitors and subwoofer and time of flight compensation, the latter is of importance when retrofitting systems in existing rooms where equal distance between all monitors and listening position may not be possible to respect.

The largest speaker in JBL’s studio monitor line, the M2 Master Reference Monitor, integrates JBL transducer technologies in a compact, two-way system. It can be placed in any production environment freestanding, behind the screen or soffit mounted. JBL’s D2 Compression Driver uses two annular diaphragms and two voice coils to deliver extended high- frequency response and very low distortion at high sound pressure levels. The D2 is mated with JBL’s 2216ND Differential Drive 15in woofer also with dual voice coils, incorporating a wire application that reduces power compression enabling linear output regardless of playback level. With these two drivers as the
engine, the M2 Master Reference Monitor delivers extended in-room response of 20Hz to 40kHz, and 129dB SPL at one metre. To allow an imperceptible transition between the two drivers, JBL engineers pioneered a waveguide dubbed ‘Image Control’ that enables neutral frequency response, on-axis and off-axis in the vertical and horizontal planes all the way down to the M2’s 800Hz crossover point. The unique geometry of the waveguide allows the M2 to deliver high-frequency detail and imaging, and natural timbre at any listening position in a broad range of acoustic environments. Parent company Harman’s Crown I-Tech power amplifiers complete the system, providing greater than a kilowatt of clean power to the 2216ND woofer and the D2 high-frequency driver. In conjunction with the M2’s waveguide, digital signal processing in the Crown I-Tech or BSS Soundweb London processor allows the implementation of an ideal crossover, while providing the option for storage of EQ presets. In conjunction with measurement software, Harman HiQnet System Architect software allows networked control of system calibration and tuning to address non-linearity in the room, ensuring a high degree of accuracy particularly in the room- dependent low-frequency area. The M2 Master Reference Monitor has a form-factor of 14in deep, 20in wide, and 49.5in tall.
