Behringer Kit For BBC Radiophonic Workshop
THE REACTIVATED Radiophonic Workshop (RWS) has chosen Behringer’s X32 digital mixing console and EUROLIVE active loudspeakers for a series of upcoming electronic music events.
The RWS has created
music and soundscapes for radio and TV programming since its launch in 1958 – before being decommissioned in 1998 – and is particularly well known for its work on Doctor Who. To celebrate both the
return of RWS and the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the RWS joined a 200-strong cast of musicians for the BBC Doctor Who Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall in July. The concert, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, will be shown on BBC television in November as part of the Doctor Who anniversary celebrations. The RWS will also be curating and headlining a mini-festival celebrating the Workshop’s legacy and their return to the stage at the London Roundhouse in

November, a venue they sold out when they last played live in 2009. As well as two sets from the RWS and guests, the event will feature a recreation of the Radiophonic Workshop in 5.1-surround sound that onlookers will be able to interact directly with. The on-stage mix, FX and monitoring will be handled by the X32 console and the S16 and P16 stage units. “Designing the system we needed was a daunting task,” said Mark Ayres, Chief Tech for the RWS. “We had to interface up to 32 channels to one computer, and bus the 5.1 surround mix from another. We needed a highly flexible routing system to allow us to easily switch the shows from
mono to 5.1, to use our own PA or the venues’ local FOH or a combination of the two. “We were looking for a
monitoring matrix that would permit each band member to tailor and control their own local mix too. In addition it had to be scaleable and expandable. The system also had to be compact, portable and robust enough to meet the demands of touring and studio use. “In the Behringer X32 we found the ideal on-stage mixer, and we found that our other needs have been easily met by the addition of the Behringer S16 stage boxes, P16 monitor distributors and associated personal monitor stations.”

>>> RECORDING KMR Audio Now In Berlin
HIGH-END GEAR supplier KMR Audio is open for business in Berlin, Germany. By operating from a
purpose-built recording studio as a showroom, KMR Audio Germany offers a demonstration facility that allows a one- to-one experience with the customer to focus on their individual needs. “Being a producer/ engineer myself, I always found it difficult to really test the equipment I was interested in before investing in it,” said Andrew Myburgh, Co-owner, KMR Audio Germany. “I found that in traditional stores I could never hear the quality of a piece of gear as the listening environment was never controlled.” KMR Germany has an
>>> INSTALLATION
Orbital HelixNet At Royal Albert Hall
ORBITAL SOUND has connected Clear-Com’s HelixNet networked partyline intercom system at the Royal Albert Hall, representing one of the first UK fixed installations for the solution. Orbital is the sole UK distributor for Clear-Com’s communications systems. A key feature of Orbital’s
system design for the Grade 1 listed building included using the existing infrastructure, as Sales Director Tom Byrne explained: “Our challenge was to find a way of upgrading what was essentially a very out- of-date system in a competitive budget. The old wiring was up to 30 years old in places, complete with enough buzzes and hums to make the communications virtually unintelligible! It was not an option to rip out the wiring infrastructure and replace it, so we came up with a different
approach that has saved thousands of pounds. HelixNet represents the ideal solution, providing the RAH with a digital four-channel comms system that runs on single three-pin XLR cables without any compromise on quality. “The venue now has clear
sound on all channels, with the system configured around a HelixNet Base station together with 15 belt packs, and appropriate interface cards.” A TW47 walkie-talkie
interface was also supplied, which integrates the RAH’s existing Motorola units to HelixNet, enabling full communications between the two systems.

The KMR Audio
showroom is in the Noisy Rooms complex in Friedrichshain, Berlin.
