MIDEAST
The excitement is building as the USA Triathlon Mideast Regional Council kicks off the inaugural Mideast Regional Paratriathlon Championships on Aug. 25 at the Lifetime Fitness Chicago Triathlon.
The Chicago Triathlon is the perfect venue to host our sprint-distance Paratriathlon Championship. It is the largest race in the country in the heart of downtown Chicago, has a flat course, and the race organizers are experienced and strong supporters of the growing paratriathlon population. Race Director Nick Lynch of Lifetime Fitness also served as the Race Director for the USA Paratriathlon Nationals in May. Although Nationals have passed, our Regional Paratriathlon Championship in the late summer provides an opportunity for paratriathletes to prepare for this tremendous event throughout the season. Awards will be presented to the top males and females (first through third) in all paratriathlon classifications.
Our Regional Paratriathlon Championships is not a qualifier for any particular race this year. However, being an inaugural event, it is our objective to pioneer the framework for all 10 USAT Regions in the country to host similar events that will eventually serve as qualifiers. Mideast Council Paratriathlon Committee members, Keri Schindler and Melissa Stockwell (both pictured), are leading the way with clear goals in mind:
1) To raise awareness of paratriathlon in the community.
2) To have all 10 USAT regions hosting Paratriathlon Regional Championships.
3) To give local paratriathletes more opportunities to compete.
More information about our Regional Paratriathlon Championships can be found on our website at

MID-ATLANTIC
The New Jersey State Triathlon is the largest triathlon in the state selling out annually to 3,000 triathletes. Since its inception, the race has hosted triathletes from almost all 50 states plus dozens of international competitors. In 2013, the state officially recognized the New Jersey State Triathlon and thus was born “The New Jersey State Championships.”
The official resolution from the State of New Jersey recognized the race for its tremendous economic impact, charitable contributions and overall benefits it has brought to the local community, regional and state as a whole.
The July 20-21 race, which takes places in Hamilton Township, N.J., is the official Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and qualifier for the USAT National Championships. CGI Racing has decided to take this a step further, or to be more exact, a step closer to home!
This year at the NJ State Triathlon we will be recognizing and honoring the New Jersey State Champions. Overall men and women winners (first, second and third) for both the Sprint and Olympic distances will receive the coveted title of “State Champion.” Additionally, “Age-Group State Champions” will be crowned for each distance for first, second and third place.

NORTHEAST
Paratriathlete Brett Sloan will take part in his first triathlon as an individual competitor on June 21 at the Summer Solstice Sprint Triathlon in Sutton, Mass. Sloan, who had his leg amputated after of a mountain biking accident while deployed in Greece, served as flight surgeon for a special operations unit and F-16 fighter squadron during his 12 years of active duty in the Air Force. A TRI-5 athlete, Sloan has partnered with the Sports Association of Gaylord Hospital, Wheeler YMCA, Wounded Warrior Project and Achilles International.
“My attraction to triathlon has more to do with enjoying the day-to-day training than the thrill of the actual competition,” Sloan said. “I am sure when raceday comes the thrill of the race will hit me.”
A self-described private person, Sloan added: “I am willing to share my story if it in any way helps someone else. I work in a VA hospital and have seen some amazing veterans overcome adversity, but I have also seen many succumb to their various illnesses.”
He has joined Team Red, White & Blue, an organization promoting physical and mental health for veterans through exercise. For a more detailed account of Sloan’s journey into the world of multisport, read the full interview at
