Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Medford, Wis. (he now serves House of Prayer, Houston), makes a large mosquito puppet sing: “I am an M-O-S-Q-U-I-T-O ouch! And I go buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz. … But there’s an E. E-L-C-A.” St. Paul has raised $1,500 for the ELCA Malaria Campaign (www.elca.org/malaria), and is challenging other congrega- tions to raise $1,500 by 2015 toward the campaign’s goal of $15 million.

Pilgrim pews

When Pilgrim Lutheran in Carmel, Ind., had to move its church due to road construction, its pews became available for use. They donated them to a Roman Catholic parish in Mis- sissippi that had been damaged by Hurricane Katrina, which member Douglas Lippert said had implica-

tions for interreligious relationship as well as just donated pews going to a good cause.

French Protestants unite The Evangelical Lutheran Church of France and the Reformed Church of France officially united May 11 to form the 400,000-member United Protestant Church of France. That’s in a country where more than half of the population now claims to be agnostic or atheist, said Laurent Schlumberger, national council president of the new church. Schlum- berger told Ecumenical News that “for five centuries, being Protestant in France meant not being Catholic. … But that world has changed. … French Protestantism can no longer exist by defining itself over against another religious group.”

Flat Martin takes a vacation Last summer, Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, Pa., cre- ated “Flat Martin (Luther)” to stay in touch with its pastor, Tara Magoon, while she was on sabbatical. Like the children’s books about Flat Stanley, a normal boy who is flattened after an unfortunate accident, Flat Martin traveled to places and did things oth- ers could not. Members then decided to keep track of one another over the summer by taking Flat Martin on vacation and sending photos to www. trinitylutheranchambersburg.us. He went on a mission trip to Haiti, attended the ELCA National Youth Gathering, showed up at softball games and a golf tournament, and went as far away as France, Russia and Finland, traveling by Model A Ford, motorcycle and plane.
