Continuing Education Scholarships Will Further Four Recipients’ Studies

ALICIA WINANS is a member of Auxiliary 203, Allenton, Michigan. Alicia is working toward a Doctor of Optometry Degree at Illinois College of Optometry in pursuit of the career she has dreamed of since high school.
“My goal in life has always been to change someone’s life for the better,” she wrote in her application.
“The education Illinois College of Optometry is presenting me with allows for the opportunity to help change the lives of young children, low-income families, the geriatric population in VA hospitals and even more individuals throughout the world who need one person to help them see the world a little bit better.”
EASTERN CONFERENCE
DOMINIC THEROUX is the son of member Audra Theroux, Auxiliary 8641, Merrimack, New Hampshire. Dominic’s goal is to become a nurse through training at St. Anselm’s College or the University of New Hampshire. “This personal goal represents more
than a career choice to me,” he wrote in his application. “It will be my way and my chance to give a little something back in appreciation for all that nurses and other personnel have done for me by caring for my mother whenever she has had to be hospitalized...” Dominic wrote that despite debilitating pain, his mother instilled strong family values and a sense of self-esteem in him.

AMY NOBLES is the daughter of member Patricia Nobles, Auxiliary 9349, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Amy’s goal is to become a Licensed Practical Nurse through the Cherokee Technology Center. She has already worked in the
health care fi eld, and her ultimate dream is to become a Registered Nurse.
“Me becoming a Certifi ed Nurse’s Assistant and a Medical Biller have only been stepping stones towards me coming closer to accomplishing that dream,” she wrote. “This scholarship will help me come another step closer. “It will also allow me to be able
to provide a better life for my three kids and me. And allow me to set an example of a strong, independent, successful mother.”
WESTERN CONFERENCE
ANGEL AMBROSE is a member of Auxiliary 3629, Fairbanks, Alaska. She is studying to be a Registered Nurse at AVTEC in Anchorage.
“My commitment to my educational goal is a lifelong quest,” she wrote in her application. She started her nursing career as a Certifi ed Nurse’s Aide, then worked in a facility and provided home care for some veterans at the end of their lives.
She earned her Practical Nursing License and worked at that level for several years before aiming for the Registered Nursing Program. She has worked a second and sometimes third job to afford this progression while helping to raise six children, two of whom have special needs. “I feel being a mature student that
is ready and wanting to learn has made me a better student, parent, wife and person,” she wrote. ■
