Cingjing Farm. A volunteer naturalist there led the way to tea trees and bushes as well as a sheep-shearing demonstration. Continuing on her journey, the National
President visited the 921 Earthquake Museum dedicated to education about the 7.3 magnitude Chi-Chi Earthquake which struck Taiwan in 1999. Back to Taipei, Director of the Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society Michael Hurst led the day’s tour, starting with the Golden Waterfall near Jinguashi, which is created by the fl ow of heavy metal elements into the riverbed, and the Gold Mine Museum. A tour there featured an exhibit depicting the lives of the Allied veterans from the Kinkaseki World War II POW Camp, who were forced to work in the harsh conditions of the mine. From there, the traveling party headed to the Kinkaseki World War II POW Camp Memorial Park. More than 1,100 British Commonwealth and Allied prisoners of war resided in the Japanese POW camp. There stands a sculptural eternal fl ame and a wall engraved with more than 4,000 names remembering the prisoner-soldiers of the 14 World War II POW camps in Taiwan. In this memorial park, National President Lemley placed a fl oral bouquet to honor those imprisoned At the Taoyuan Training Center of the
Veterans Affairs Committee, the National President witnessed their mission in action: to provide vocational training, job skills certifi cation and employment consultations to veterans and their family
members.This allowed a better understanding of the commitment of the Taiwan VAC to veterans. The National President returned to the United States with myriad other memories of exciting places visited and relationsips with the Taiwanese people reconfi rmed. ■ MS
