South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Stagecoach Supertram have announced plans to carry out a five-year programme to replace rails across the 29km light rail network at a cost of £32m. The work is due to begin at the end of this month on the section between Spring Lane and Park Grange Croft.

Each vehicle accommodates up to 226 passengers and the line has capacity for up to 30,000 passengers per hour. Bombardier is also responsible for operation and maintenance of the system. Test operation began on schedule at the end of 2009 with the aim of starting commercial services on the 15-station line in July 2010. However, the opening was deferred by the city council,


trials prior to entering service at the end of the year.


which expressed concerns over noise and safety. Following a year of delays, YRTC sued the council in the International Court of Arbitration, which ruled in its favour and ordered the council to pay Won 515.9bn ($US 435m) to YRTC in damages for the delay. As this was equivalent to


around 40% of the city’s total annual budget, the council has sought other ways to compensate YRTC for the delay. According to local press reports the city has agreed to provide Won 29.5bn towards the operation of the line and plans to restructure its investment in the project.


Siemens completes first C2 train for Munich U-Bahn S


Munich City Utilities (SWM) placed a ƒ185m order with Siemens in November 2010 for


21 six-car C2 sets with options for a further 46 trains. The trains are being built at the Siemens plant in Simmering, Vienna, although final assembly of 14 trains will be carried out at Siemens’ Allach plant near Munich.


Following the completion of dynamic testing at Wildenrath, the first train will undergo further trials in Munich with the aim of introducing the first four C2s into commercial service in December. All trains from the initial order are due to be delivered by 2015. The 90km/h C2s will


expand Munich’s U-Bahn fleet and enable headways to be cut from 2min 30sec to 2 minutes in the city centre. Each 114m-long train accommodates up to 940 passengers (at 4 passengers per m2), 220 of them seated.

A consortium of RATP Dev and Transdev has secured a Yuan 330m ($US 53.5m) three-year contract to operate the 60km light rail network, which is due to open on July 1. The operating company will be 51% owned by the municipality with Transdev and RATP Dev holding the remaining 49% stake.


Singapore The Land Transport


Authority has invited bids by August 29 for 53 four-car trains for the new Thomson Line, the first section of which is due to open in 2019. The winner will be required to design, manufacture, test and commission the trains as well as put them into service.


Utrecht


The Dutch competition court has ruled that Greater Utrecht Regional Public Transport Authority acted lawfully in awarding the concession for the city’s light rail and bus networks to Qbuzz, rejecting a complaint and appeal by competitor OV Regio Utrecht, a 100% subsidiary of Connexxion (part of Transdev). The ruling means that Qbuzz will take over regional public transport operations in and around Utrecht in December.
