Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has invited bids for a contract to rebuild Line 3. The ƒ137m project is 94%- funded by the European Union, and includes doubling the single-track section on Bihari út.
Delhi
Tunnelling has been completed on the 1.5km Mandi House - Janpath section of the 9.4km Line 6 extension from Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate. The 3km Central Secretariat - Mandi House section is due to open next year.
Light rail arrives in Oran
officially inaugurated the first light rail line in the city of Oran on May 1 in the presence of Mr Abelmalek Boudiaf, the Wali of Oran. Commercial services began on May 2 on the 18.7km line, which operates between 05.00 and 23.00 every day and is expected to carry around 90,000 passengers per day. Services are operated by a fleet of 30 Alstom Citadis 302 low- floor LRVs, which were assembled at Alstom’s Santa Perpètua de Mogoda plant

The 32-station line is operated by Setram, a joint venture between Paris Transport Authority subsidiary RATP Dev and Algiers Metro (EMA) and Algiers Public Transport (ETUSA). RATP Dev is the majority shareholder in the company with a 49% stake, while EMA holds 30% and ETUSA the remaining 21%. Setram also has contracts to operate the eastern line of the Algiers light rail network and the first tram line in the city of Constantine, which is due to open later this year.
Preferred bidder chosen for Rio’s Porto Maravilha LRT
Group and Invepar has been selected as the preferred bidder for a PPP contract to design, build, operate, and maintain the 28km light rail network in Porto Maravilha, Rio de Janeiro.

The consortium will carry out civil works on the 28km network and will also be responsible for procuring electrical and mechanical systems including signalling and rolling stock. Consortium member RATP Dev will operate the system for 25 years, and CCR has confirmed

The 42-station network is expected to carry up to 250,000 passengers per day, with services operating at headways ranging from 5 to 15 minutes. The first two lines are scheduled to open next year with the remaining four due for completion in 2016.
The Reais 1.2bn ($US 600m) network is being funded with the aid of a Reais 532m grant from the federal government’s Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC).
Dublin
Ireland’s transport minister Mr Leo Varadkar signed the first preliminary construction contracts on May 16 for the ƒ368m project to connect the Luas light rail Red and Green lines in Dublin City Centre. Enabling works will begin this month on the 5.6km Cross City Line from St Stephen’s Green to Broombridge, which is due to open in late-2017.
Jaipur
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the body responsible for implementing the new metro network in the city, has awarded Thales a contract to supply passenger information systems for both the Orange and Green lines. The system is similar to that installed on the Delhi Metro, and will interface with the traffic management system to provide visual and audio information.
London
Transport for London has (TfL) placed an £88m order with Bombardier for 57 additional class 378 emu vehicles as part of a £320m project to lengthen trains on the London Overground network from four to five cars. The intermediate vehicles are due for delivery between the end of next year and late-2015 and will increase the capacity of each class 378 set from around 700 to 850 passengers.
New York
NJ Transit has launched a three-month smartphone ticketing pilot on the Pascack Valley commuter rail line, which will be used to evaluate the technology before a wider rollout across the NJ Transit rail network. The MyTix app can be downloaded to any device with a web-enabled iOS or Android operating system, and is available free- of-charge via Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store.
Oslo
Siemens handed over the 100th MX3000 metro train to metro operator Collective Transport Production (KTP) on April 24, 10 years after the contract was signed for the initial batch of three-car trains. The final train is due to be delivered in the second quarter of next year
Rome
Construction began on April 15 on section T3 of Rome metro Line 3, which will extend the line 3km from San Giovanni to Fori Imperiali/ Colosseo. The ƒ792m project includes two new underground stations at Amba Aradam and an interchange with Line B at Colosseo and is due to be completed in 2020.
San Diego
San Diego Association of Governments (Sandag), the body responsible for public planning and transport in the San Diego area, launched public consultation on May 17 on the draft environmental report for the $US 1.7bn Mid- Coast Corridor Transit Project. Construction is due to start in 2015 on the 17.7km eight- station line, which will serve Linda Vista, Pacific Beach, and University campuses north of the city.
Seattle
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 29 to mark the start of construction on Sound Transit’s $US 383.2m South 200th Link light rail extension, which is due for completion in 2016. The 2.6km line will extend the Link light rail line south beyond Seattle-
