New Exhibit Helps Us Never Forget

The museum’s story of the Holocaust was enhanced in 2012 to spotlight the American Soldiers that liberated Nazi concentration

camps at the end of World War II. The exhibit is dedicated to Judge Aaron Cohn, a beloved juvenile court judge who died in July at the age of 96. As one of those young Soldiers, Cohn never forgot what happened in 1945.

Also new to the museum last year was a display honoring an elite club of combat veterans. The Triple Combat Infantryman’s Badge has been awarded to only 325 Soldiers who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

And an old locomotive that carried troops and supplies across Fort Benning was moved to a location near World War II Company Street. The display includes an observation car that transported the post’s distinguished visitors.

Museum Wows Both Veterans and VIPs

The National Infantry Museum hosted visits by numerous VIPs in 2012, including U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, China’s

General Liang Guanglie, and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

But many of the VIPs that toured the museum do not live in the spotlight. They are the Soldiers who risked their lives over the past seven decades in service to their nation.

One such group of visitors was the Flying Tigers. Four of the six surviving members of the legendary volunteers who assisted China during the 1941 Japanese invasion proudly answered museum visitors’ questions about their service and their legacy as heroes and then autographed memorabilia. The group known for its shark- faced planes became one of the only positive things to happen in the Pacific Theater at the beginning of World War II.

FOURTH OF JULY The Maneuver Center of Excellence Band entertained both Soldiers and civilians on the museum’s front lawn on Indepen- dence Day. Inside, Revolutionary War reenactors brought history to life.
