CLARKE BACKS PRIMARY RUGBY LEAGUE INITIATIVE
Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke was on hand to launch the West Cumbria Primary Rugby League initiative at Lakes College, Workington, accepting the invitation to become the project’s ambassador.
‘It’s great to see that focus is being placed on the children,’ said the former Wigan Warriors player.
‘The format that Cumbria has adopted is the right way forward and seems an obvious way to develop better skills.’
The season, which kicked off on Saturday April 13, sees teams take part in 11 festivals throughout the summer.
A new playing format has been introduced that will see a change to 4-a-side for U7s; 5-a-side for U8s and 6-a-side for U9s.
These changes will lead to every child having an increased involvement in the games.
Primary Rugby League Manager Martyn Rothwell said: ‘The priority has to be to offer children a fun experience and this format goes a long way to achieving this goal.’
His thoughts are echoed by Cumbria Rugby League manager, Alan Davidson: ‘We are already seeing the benefits of the with the introduction of new teams from Clifton and Distington.’
