“Making cities more livable is an effective climate strategy in itself.”

park·let /pahrk'·let/

(n.) A community gathering space tempo- rarily installed in public right-of-ways like parking spaces and unused bus stops. With plantings, artwork, and creative outdoor

seating, parklets create greener and more pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. Pioneering San Francisco is home to more than three dozen parklets—like the two above. Cities from Philadelphia to Los Angeles are now following suit.

JAD DALEY THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND’S CLIMATE CONSERVATION PROGRAM

DIRECTOR TALKS TREES, TAILPIPES, AND TRANSFORMING CITIES

What drew you to a career in conservation? As a child, I was fortunate enough to spend summers on MacMahan Island in Maine. It’s a very special place, only reachable by boat, with just 30 cottages scattered across it. I roved the island like a wild ani- mal—it was an idyllic outdoor existence. I wanted to work to make sure others could have the same kind of

experiences in nature. A couple of other people who grew up spend- ing time on that island have also gotten into conservation. There must have been something in the water!
