“What a wonderful thing to turn a blight into us- able space that will help people get off the couch and go outside. Kudos!”

A royal family I was very pleased to see the ar- ticle on Royal Gorge (“Landmarks,” Land&People Fall/Winter 2012). We went skiing at Royal Gorge every year from 1978 to 1999 when we lived in the Bay Area. Our two boys learned to ski there before they were in elementary school. We used to stay at the Royal Gorge lodge over Christ- mas week with our boys. The same families came back year after year. I am glad to hear it will be preserved and improved. Rita Moore, Mercer Island, Washington

Straddling the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, Royal Gorge is the largest cross-country ski facility in North America—now per- manently protected from development.

Snap-happy I want to share how much I appreci- ate the quality of the photography in Land&People. I know how hard it is to get great shots of smiling people in action. I have passed copies of Land&People on to boards on which I serve as an example of how to employ photos to tell the story of an organization. So if you’re going to redesign Land&People, my only advice is: preserve the photo budget! Jamie Trowbridge, Dublin, New Hampshire

“Sally Jewell is a business person as well as an environmentalist. We need people who understand both.”

President Obama’s pick for secretary of the interior was a winner to us even before she got the nomination: Jewell’s conservation work earned her our Land for People award in 2012.

LAND&PEOPLE IS LISTENING! Send letters to the editor or change your mailing address: mailroom@tpl.org.

Buzz is building around the Queens Way, an ambitious proposal to convert 3.5 miles of abandoned railway in Queens into New York City’s next great linear park. Stay tuned to tpl.org to watch this project unfold.

The land she loves I wish so much that I could afford to send in a larger donation. I am old—97—and I live like a church mouse. But I love what The Trust for Public Land is doing. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina and I know those leaves, trees, and lakes better than most. Marie Runyon, New York, New York

A heartfelt welcome to new member Marie, who made her first donation to The Trust for Public Land at age 97. Thank you, Marie! We couldn’t do this work without the generosity of supporters like you.
