Plans to build a 12.2km cross- city light rail line have been rejected in a local referendum, despite having the backing of a majority of local politicians. The ƒ230m Campusbahn was opposed by 66% of voters in the city.
Berlin
Santo Domingo opens second metro line P
RESIDENT Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic attended a ceremony in the capital Santo Domingo on April 1 to mark the opening of the city’s second metro line. Passengers were able to travel free-of-charge until April 7, when revenue service began. The first phase of the underground east-west Line 2 is 13.7km long and has 14 stations. It runs from Eduardo Brito via Juan Pablo Duarte, where it connects with Line 1, to María Montez and is expected to carry 400,000 passengers a day.
The line has been equipped
by the Eurodom consortium led by Siemens, which was responsible for project management, signalling and train control, and installation of 1.5kV dc overhead
conductor rail. Thales supplied communications, signalling, supervision and fare collection equipment. In a separate ƒ101m contract, Alstom has supplied a fleet of 15 three-car trains, each accommodating up to 617 passengers. A second phase is planned which will extend Line 2 to 21km and add another six stations. The total cost of Line 2 is estimated at $US 1.58bn.
Following a successful legal challenge by DB Regio, Berlin Brandenburg Transport Authority (VBB) has issued a revised tender for the Ringbahn, the first part of the Berlin S-Bahn network to be tendered on a competitive basis. DB Regio objected to the proposed contractual requirement for the winning bidder to continue provision and maintenance of the train fleet for 15 years beyond the end of the operating contract in 2032.
Daugavpils (Latvia)
Belkommunmash, Belarus, has been awarded a ƒ6.7m contract to supply 12 LRVs for the city’s 25km tram network. The vehicles are being funded through the European Regional Development Fund, which is financing the modernisation of the system.
Delhi
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has awarded Bombardier a contract worth around Rs 2.5bn ($US 47m) to supply its Cityflo 350 integrated train control and signalling system for three metro extensions in the Indian capital. The system will be installed on the 9.4km northern extension of Line 6 from Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate and the 14km southern extension from Badarpur to YMCA Chowk in the satellite city of Faridabad, together with the 11km western extension of Line 5 from Mundka to Bahadurgarh City Park.
Panama metro train on test: Testing began in Barcelona last month on the first Alstom Metropolis train for Panama metro Line 1, which is due to open next year. The set is undergoing an eight-week programme of traction and braking tests on the standard-gauge FGC suburban lines from Plaça de Catalunya to Terrassa and Sabadell. Alstom is supplying Panama with 57 metro cars, which are being assembled at its Santa Perpetua de Mogoda plant near Barcelona.
IRJ May 2013 Gera (Germany)
Work officially started on April 12 on the ƒ56m upgrade of the tram network, which is the second-oldest in Germany, dating back to 1892. The project includes improved
station access for people with disabilities, and measures to reduce journey times such as priority signalling at road junctions. The work will be completed in 2015.
Helsinki
Länsimetro, the company founded by the cities of Helsinki and Espoo to build the 13.9km Western metro, has awarded Pöyry a ƒ6.3m design contract for the 8km second phase from Matinkylä to Kivenlahti in Espoo. Pöyry will provide services including track engineering, rock and geotechnical engineering, architectural design and structural engineering for tunnels, stations, and depots.
Hyderabad
The first 5000-tonne batch of rails produced by Tata Steel, France, for the city’s metro network was delivered in March. The first section of the network is due to open next year (IRJ March p26).
Linz
Public consultation has begun on the 4.4km extension of light rail Line 3 to Traun. Construction will start next year on the initial section between Doblerholz and the shopping complex at Plus City, with the first trams expected to run in mid-2015. The remainder of the line to Schloss Traun will be commissioned in 2016.
London
Four bidders have prequalified for the contract to operate the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) from September 14 2014. The bidders include: Stagecoach Rail Projects; a joint venture of Keolis UK and Amey Rail; a Go-Ahead and Colas Rail joint venture; and the current operator Serco. Transport for London (TfL) will select a preferred bidder by the middle of next year.
Moscow
Russian tram supplier Ust- Katav Wagon Plant (UKWZ) has delivered the first two vehicles from an order for 67 type 71-623 trams. The vehicles include a low-floor area in the centre section.
