Message from the President & Executive VP

2012

WAS ANOTHER EXCELLENT PERIOD of growth for both the Province of British Columbia and BOMA.While much of the world continued to suffer through economic uncertainty, BC and

particularly downtown Vancouver benefitted from strong investor confidence. Our metro market witnessed the biggest office building boom in 20 years. A number of new office towers are now under construction due to many companies acquiring additional space and planning for significant growth. This activity coupled with impressive investment in infrastructure megaprojects throughout BC is affirmation that the economy here remains solid in comparison. BOMA also continues to grow with many new members admitted in 2012 and

more services provided. As always, BOMA strives to be the preeminent voice of the commercial real estate industry under the guidance of a strong Board of Directors. Following our 100th Annual GeneralMeeting, the BOMA BC Board endorsed a number of important initiatives throughout the year:

• Undertaking a 360 organizational review from an independent consultant to ensure that BOMA can continue to effectively provide desired services and benefits to its members for the long term in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. An action plan is now in place.

• Partnering with the Provincial Government, BC Hydro and Fortis BC to provide valuable energy saving programs to members.

• Working with BOMA Canada to continue to build the BOMA brand. For example, we’re helping BOMA Canada expand our BESt environmental certification program across Canada and in other markets. For the first time, we have a relationship with a newly formed BOMA China.

• Achieving further success in reducing the property tax burden on commercial properties, with the City of Vancouver proceeding in 2012 with an additional 0.25%shift from the commercial to residential class rate.

• Continued advocacy to ensure effective regulation in our industry without undue red tape.

• Exciting and well-attended networking events for continued relationship- building with our peers.

The first few months of 2013 have been busy with efforts focused on implementation of our organizational action plan; ramping up our government affairs program; expanding our energy management program with BOMA uTrack, and developing a communication and social media strategy. We hope you enjoy this Year In Review report and thank all of our members,

volunteers, sponsors and staff for their contributions in 2012. Thanks for your continued support! 
