More than 100 members of the Colonial Figure Skating Club got to skate with Mickey Mouse and Disney on Ice perform- ers Perri Faulk and Maria Simoni on Jan. 29. Colonial’s basic and advanced skill skaters showed off their skating skills to an appreciative Mickey Mouse, while Colonial’s higher-level skaters participated in a talent workshop with Faulk and Si- moni. The talent workshop helps to prepare young skaters for a successful life and career utilizing performance figure skat- ing. Throughout the years, more than 30 Colonial FSC skaters have gone on to perform with Disney on Ice, including Colo- nial Basic Skills Development Director Sarah Rosenfield and Colonial Basic Skills Creative Director Sheryl Franks. “We’re proud of our relationship with Disney on Ice and are thrilled to be able to provide this kind of experience for our skaters,” Rosenfield said. Charlottesville FSC raises money for local food bank Members of the Charlottesville Figure Skating Club and
the Blue Ridge Hockey Association (BRHA) teamed up to host a frozen skate-a-thon that raised more than $1,500 for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank as part of 2013 National Skating Month. “I have been a member of our club for more than 15
years,” Skating Director Tiffany Thornton said. “This was by far one of the coolest things we have ever done. I’m so happy to have been a part of it.” Skaters of all ages and levels skated around the perime-
ter of the ice at Charlottesville’s Main Street Arena as sponsors made donations by the lap. The youngest participant, Thorn- ton’s 4-year-old son, completed 20 laps, while the older skat- ers circled the ice more than 100 times. The Charlottesville FSC raised $1,550 in two hours.
