versity, from which she graduated in December 2011, she decided to study what interested her while also keeping an open mind about what life would hold after college. Now 1 1/2 years after graduating with a sociology major and a minor in political science, she’s exploring new horizons as a business analyst with Deloitte Consulting. “I really wanted to see the world and get


experience,” Hughes, 24, said. “Going into con- sulting, I’ve gotten to see so many industries and so many different types of business problems and how to address them and how to be more effi- cient.” Shortly before this interview, she traveled to


Basel, Switzerland, and San Francisco for her cur- rent project involving a pharmaceutical company. In Basel, her group ran workshops for the compa- ny. As luck would have it, the Carnival of Basel was going on at the time. “Tey had parades through the streets every


day,” Hughes said. “Everyone was dressed up in costumes. Te celebration started at 4 on Mon- day morning, so my project team decided that we should watch some of the festivities. So at 4 a.m. we were out there watching for an hour. Ten we went back to sleep because we had to get ready for our workshop.”

champion Sarah Hughes is her older sister — Hughes wasn’t the first in her family to skate com- petitively, but that didn’t stop her from making it her own thing. As kids, she and Sarah received some unique opportunities to perform together and individually at various shows. One performance when she was about 12 stands out for Hughes, skating between periods at
