Gorki Indoor Waterpark New venue spearheads Russian tourist development

Gorki Indoor Waterpark is a new aquatic facility that opened late last year just outside the Russian city of Ryazan, 120 miles south of Moscow. Part of the wider Oka Gemchugina Family Entertainment Resort, the undercover waterpark designed and supplied by Polin Waterparks and Pool Systems covers a 7,200 square-metre area spread over two levels.

On the upper level, families with small children can lounge in an artificial lake with mini slides, fountains and showers, while down on the main level it’s all action with extreme waterslides, two

pools, a solarium, leisure river, whirlpool and a variety of other amusement rides. Days before the waterpark’s official opening, thermometers in the local region were measuring “highs” of -18°C. Pipes were bursting, schools were closed and flights had been disrupted due to the extreme weather. But inside the gleaming new facility officials basked in balmy temperatures! Polin, which now operates a Russian office in Krasnador, installed a variety of slides. The most extreme is a 30m-long kamikaze slide, with a “chicken” exit available for those who have second thoughts once they get to top. Also featured are a Space Hole/Black Hole combination, Magic Hole, Aquatube, double tubes and a tunnel slide. The wave pool is popular with both children and adults, while the Leisure River takes guests on a floating journey through dark, magical caves and tunnels. Kids’ attractions include smaller versions of Polin’s classic body slides, tunnel sides and wide slides, as well as themed octopus, frog, cobra, turtle, rabbit and rainbow slides, not to mention various showers and spray features.

Built by a public-private partnership. the new waterpark can accommodate as many as 1,000 guests a day and is part of a programme to encourage increased domestic tourism. Besides the waterpark, the Oka Gemchugina complex also includes a hotel spa and several restaurants. Other new projects planned for the region over the next two years include a fishing village, yacht club, a complex of guest houses and a second hotel.
