With inky engine oil coating the cracks in his hands, John Carrick handles the Bible as easily as he handles drive sprockets in his Aff ordable Transmission shop in Anchorage, Alaska. For an unassuming mechanic who doesn’t advertise, word has certainly spread that John doesn’t just house stacks of clutches plates in his small business but case after case of Bibles.
In 1999, John was struck by Jesus’ words about bearing fruit. “I thought, ‘Do I have any fruit?’ T at’s when I decided to order 10 Bibles, and I thought, I’ll witness to 10 people,” John recalls. “All the Bibles went in one day.”
T at fi rst day was more than 150,000 Bibles ago, and John continues to buy and give away Bibles for free.
He had his doubts about one eager white missionary from Texas aiming to evangelize native Alaskans. “I’ve seen a lot of people come from the Lower 48, and the country just fl at beats them up. I thought to myself, ‘She’s not going to last a half hour out there,’ ” John admits. “She took some Bibles and headed out, and I totally expected to never see her again.”
“T at was seven and a half years ago,” Brenda Crim with Alaska Missions confi dently explains. “Because John has helped me break
inertia on this ministry, we’re taking the Word of God into isolated, dark areas of Alaska. T ere are 130 villages without any work of God in them at all.”
