T

hough Darrell and Billie Farrow of Terlton, Okla- homa, once won a 250-yard race with DSP Annies Flash, they felt he would be better at longer distances. “The way he’s built—he’s longer and lankier—and as he aged, we thought he could do it,” Darrell said. That decision not only resulted in several more victo- ries, it earned DSP Annies Flash the very fi rst Distance Championship. The Farrows fi rst tried the gelding at 870 yards in 2011 at Fair Meadows, and he ran third. For 2012, they kept him around the hook the entire season. After another third at Fair Meadows, he won three consecutive races, including the Grade 1 Spots N Dots Handicap on July 28.

As a 20-1 longshot, DSP Annies Flash broke on top, laid third around the turn and challenged the leaders at the top of the stretch.

“He comes out of the turn, and he’s good and strong at the end,” Darrell said.

DSP Annies Flash defeated Appaloosa champion Moon Bully, the 3-5 favorite, by a nose.

After the Spots N Dots, DSP Annies Flash won an allow- ance race prior to the Sequoyah Stakes. “We had entered him in the Sequoyah, but he colicked a lit- tle bit,” Darrell said. “He ran fourth and just wasn’t himself.” DSP Annies Flash is now back on his game, and the Far- rows planned to race him again in 2013, his 7-year-old sea- son. Rick Maxville trains the sorrel solid gelding, who is by Royal Quick Flash out of the Quarter Horse mare Streakin Peacock.

Doug and Susie Peacock bred DSP Annies Flash, who is double registered, and they campaigned him for his fi rst few seasons—sometimes as a Paint and sometimes as a Quarter Horse. The Farrows bought the gelding from the Peacocks privately in late 2009. Streakin Peacock has also produced Quarter Horses, and the mare has foaled four registered Paints, two by Royal Quick Flash and two by Masterjoebow- ers.

DSP Annies Flash earned $26,154 in 2012. His lifetime Paint earnings are $36,904; including his Quarter Horse rac- es, he has total earnings of $43,194.
