Sustainability and Recycling

With a strong emphasis on using products with green credentials amongst the retail community at the current time, we speak to some key industry professionals on their views on recycling and sustainable products…..

Andrew Hempsall, Operations Director, arken P‐O‐P International

“Faced with the current economic situation, maybe it is time to consider putting sustainability issues to one side – until greater financial prosperity returns and we are able to afford more time and resources to tackling the subject? To adopt such a stance, however, is to fail to understand the true value of sustainability.

Being truly sustainable about how you design and produce POS displays means identifying ways to reduce the number of component parts within a proposed design, or using less energy and reducing waste during the P‐O‐P manufacturing process. And they, in turn, result in financial savings too. Cost savings that can then be passed on to clients. To arken, a key aim has been shaping the way our people think about ‘green’ issues and to have our finger on the pulse of exactly what opportunities exist that would be game changing for our business, and bring knock‐on benefits to our clients. We started to think about energy consumption, throughout our entire operation. Once we began the journey, we soon saw how much unnecessary energy was being used. As a result, we have rolled out a number of energy initiatives to reduce our overall electricity and gas usage by a combined 7 per cent annually, the equivalent of approximately 130 tonnes of CO2. But we didn’t stop there. We have also investigated water efficiency of new and existing plant and aims to reduce the amount of materials waste going into landfill by over 100 tonnes. These figures are startling and provide a clear indication of what can be achieved with the right focus and internal commitment. They’re also the reason why as a business arken P‐O‐P is such a strong supporter of the new environmental best practice accreditation, the PSS (POPAI Sustainability Standard) that has been launched by the industry trade association, POPAI UK & Ireland.”
