Samsung aims to lead the domestic appliances market


AT its European Forum 2013 in Monaco Samsung announced its ambition to lead the global domestic appliances industry. The manufacturer laid out its vision of creating richer experiences for European consumers through its understanding of the region and its continuous investment in research and development. Samsung also declared that home appliances will become the focus of its growth plans and the company aims to become the world’s number one manufacturer of home appliances by 2015. the premium end of the refrigeration, cooking and floorcare categories. Russell Owens, head of digital appliances at Samsung, told IER: “With market leading positions globally in TV and mobile, home appliances is the next area targeted for growth. The


The government has launched the Future High Streets Forum to address issues facing the UK's struggling town centres. Building on the work of the Portas Review, leaders from business, councils, retail and property will work together to find ways of revitalising town centres. It will also develop new policies to help town centres adapt and change to meet the changing needs of consumers. The Forum will be co- chaired by Local Growth minister Mark Prisk and Alex Gourlay, CE of Alliance Boots.

Energy Saving Trust extends its green services Consumer needs more guidance on ‘green’ products


THE Energy Saving Trust is extending its labelling and verification services after 12 years running the consumer- facing Energy Saving Trust recommended scheme (ESTr).


The new extended schemes will build on the legacy of the Trust’s ESTr scheme introduced in 2000 and they will include the following services:


• Energy labelling


consultancy – bespoke labelling schemes for green products to help inform consumers’ buying decisions;


• Green claims verification – a service to validate companies’ claims, messages and product information;


• Green Deal measures package – a unique scheme that combines the most energy efficient products with Green Deal providers.


The Electrical Safety Council’s Product Safety Conference will take place on 16 May at London’s Church House Conference Centre. The theme for this year’s conference is protecting consumers through a 360° approach. A key focus of the conference will be an evaluation of recall processes and ‘traceability’, ie how dangerous products are tracked within the supply chain and to consumers, for repair or return to the company issuing a recall notice.


Total value of the durables market fell by 2.4% in December 2012, compared to the same month last year, driven by the fall in the consumer electronics sector, which declined by 14%, reported GfK. Buoyed by the popularity of tablets, the IT sector was given a boost and its value grew 8.9% compared to December last year. The internet accounted for 18% of value sales in December 2012 (up from 17% in December last year).


Failed high street camera chain Jessops has closed all of its stores, resulting in the loss of around 1,370 jobs. Administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers confirmed that all 187 stores had been shut down and that more jobs would be lost at the retailer’s head office in Leicester.
