Not a diocese When the Episcopal Church’s Dio- cese of South Carolina seceded in 2012 over debates including sexu- ality and orthodoxy, it also took its name. According to a state judge, only the group that left can use the name Diocese of South Carolina. Now the 19 parishes and six wor- ship groups choosing to remain in the national church body have a pro- visional bishop, Charles Glenn von Rosenburg, and a new name: The Episcopal Church in South Caro- lina. Rosenburg, a retired bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee, asked members for tolerance and under- standing during the transition.

voted to allow concealed handguns in churches and other houses of worship. At presstime, Gov. Mike Beebe was expected to sign “The Church Protec- tion Act,” removing the state’s ban of concealed handguns in churches. State Sen. Bryan King (Republican) told Arkansas Online that the mea- sure would allow individual churches to decide “what they want to do for security.” State Sen. Linda Chester- field (Democrat) said she was “trying to wrap [her] head around” the mea- sure, adding, “If there was one person who was anti-violent, it was my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Myanmar meeting At its gathering Jan. 14-17 in Yangon, Myanmar, the Lutheran World Fed- eration Committee for World Service visited four of 50 villages where the organization works with communities to promote sustainable livelihoods. The ELCA is a member of the LWF, a worldwide communion of churches. The LWF began working in the area in 2008 after Cyclone Nargis killed nearly 140,000 people. LWF Depart- ment for World Service director Eber- hard Hitzler told committee members that the likelihood of natural disas- ters remains a challenge for Luther- ans, whose humanitarian response is affected by climate change, increased violent conflicts, the global financial conflict and more.

Ethiopian Lutherans sever ties The Ethiopian Evangelical [Lutheran] Church Mekane Yesus is severing its relationship with the ELCA, the Church of Sweden and “those churches who have openly accepted same-sex marriage.” The action to implement the decisions at all levels of the Ethiopian church was ratified at the denomination’s general assembly Jan. 27-Feb. 2 in Addis Ababa. “The ELCA is very saddened by this decision,” said Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director for ELCA Global Mis- sion. “The ELCA and its predeces- sor church bodies have been walk- ing with the people of Ethiopia for more than 50 years, and our sister church, the Church of Sweden, for more than 150 years ….” Malpica Padilla said the ELCA isn’t “locking the doors from our side” and both he and Presiding Bishop Mark S. Han- son, who called the decision “deeply troubling,” said the ELCA stands ready to open the door of conversa- tion for reconciliation.
Pastor apologizes for prayer A Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod pastor in Newtown, Conn., apolo- gized after being reprimanded for participating in an interfaith vigil following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Rob Morris, pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church, prayed at the vigil attended by Connecticut Gov. Dan- nel Malloy and President Barack Obama the Sunday following the Dec. 14 shootings. Christian, Mus- lim, Jewish and Baha’i clergy par- ticipated. The LCMS constitution prohibits ministers from taking part in services with members of differ- ent faiths. “I believed my participa- tion to be, not an act of joint wor- ship, but an act of community chap- laincy,” Morris wrote in his apology letter.
