DISCOREVIEWS Hiem & Roots Manuva

DJ Culture Nang 7.0

Sheffield’s Heim tag legendary London MC, Roots Manuva, on this surprise collaboration for Nang. A loose disco/hip-hop rhythm provides a solid base for Roots Manuva’s cynical rap; dealing with the subject of the lavish and elite lifestyle of the superstar DJ. Remixes come in disco-dub format from the likes of Pete Herbert, James Bright and DJ Maxximus & Dirk Leyers. Lots of crossover potential and very likely to appear in the playlists of Toddla T, Annie Mac etc.

Legowelt

Star Gazing EP Unknown To The Unknown

10

Unknown To The Unknown drop their opening gambit for the New Year; a new release from the one-and-only Legowelt, fresh from his ‘end- of-year’, chart-toppling album release, ‘The Paranormal Soul’. With three tracks to choose from, ‘Star Gazing’ boasts more of the unique, retro- futuristic charm that Legowelt has built a solid reputation upon; whether it be the deeper house shade of ‘Visions In My Mind’; the quasi-hardcore tribute, ‘Star Gazing’ or the acidic, ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, there’s something for all of the analogue day-dreamers amongst you. Stunning.

Almamy

Digital Love Modyworks 7.5

Ten years on, Daft Punk’s perennial classic ‘Digital Love’ (written with the aid of DJ Sneak, infamously sampling George Duke’s ‘I Love You More’) gets a makeover from hip, NYC-based singer-songwriter, Almamy. Inverting the mood from jaunty disco house to slow, grinding electro, Almamy takes little from Homem-Christo/Bangalter’s original and uses his falsetto to clash with an overdriven bassline and pulverizing rhythm.

Remixed 2020 Vision 7.5

In advance of a full-length remix album, 2020 Vision drop this teaser single release with three cuts remixed by Burnski, Wolf + Lamb and Bonar Bradberry. Leeds-born producer Burnski settles quickly into a nu-disco swagger, with elasticized basslines and choppy, Nile Rodgers-style guitar licks. Bonar Bradberry also takes a nu-disco stance, throwing in a canny piano breakdown. Finally, Balearic/ cosmic disco fans might want to check Wolf + Lamb’s slow, dreamy version.

Fall Back DFA 9.0

It may not have the same idiosyncratic allure of the band’s DFA debut, ‘Two Different Ways’, but it more than makes up for this in energy. ‘Fall Back’ is a merciless, iron-fisted, distorted acid groove that clocks a pacey 130bpm, and an icy-cool, deadpan vocal from Nik Void adds to the charm. This and three locked-grooves on the 12” (each an interpretation of the lead tune from each of the three band members), have got me worked up in anticipation of a promised DFA album debut in May. Killer stuff.

More stadium-friendly, sonic pyrotechnics from the Justice boys, who lick some jagged rock guitar phrases into shape for their latest, ‘Helix’. Alongside this lead, a couple of other highlights from the duo’s last album appear — the emo-electro of ‘Presence’ and ‘Ohio’, as well as a brace of remixes from Gesaffelstein and Domenico Torti, the former’s hard, Drexciya-influenced electro being one of the EP’s highlights.

The Deadstock 33s

Underneath The Pines Gomma 8.5

Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s make an appearance on Gomma ahead of a very exciting- sounding album to come early March. ‘Underneath The Pines’ laments the heady days of acid house alongside some weighty remixes from Ewan Pearson and London-based party crew, Disco Bloodbath. No stranger to the Balearic sound of house music, Justin’s ‘House’ and ‘Club’ remixes nod to the old guard, whereas the remixers offer a modern twist in both their ‘Vocal’ and ‘Instrumental’ versions. Solid EP.

Woolfy vs Projections

Set Me Loose Permanent Vacation 7.0

Space rock crew Woolfy vs Projections are back with this primer to a forthcoming album release. This ‘AM radio-friendly’ EP draws on their love of blue- eyed soul and Balearic music, fashioning a lengthy, psychedelic journey. The remixes remain fairly faithful to the original, with the likes of Lexx and The Drifter sharpening things up into more ‘hypnotic’ house versions.

Benoit & Sergio

Bridge So Far Hot Creations 8.0

Catchy electro-disco single from DFA/ Visionquest alumni, Benoit & Sergio, that’s backed with a weighty dub tune, ‘$100 BILL’. Top stuff.

Bohemian Groove

High Jinks Throne Of Blood 9.0

Eccentric disco release on ‘quality-guaranteed’ imprint, Throne Of Blood. Brilliant stuff with Legowelt-style synth touches. Includes a remix from Versatile’s Gilb’r.

QUICKIES Didier Morris

Suspicious Love EP Southern Fried 7.0

Weighty boogie/electro- disco EP from Miami- based producer, Didier Morris. The haunting, proto house vibe of ‘Wonderful Seduction’ is the one for me.
