QUICKIES Groovuscule
Angry Silicon Dxxxorient Records 6.0
Having previously released on UK crustie techno legends Eat Static’s label, Groovuscule’s catchy happy housey riff gets a skippy underpinning that is quirky enough to bring a smile to your face.
Harvard Bass Plex (Dubfire
Rework) SCI+TEC 6.0
SCI+TEC’s boss Dubfire remakes the track that came out on Jesse Keeler’s label a while back. A simple but effective growler.
ELECTROREVIEWS The White Lamp
Make It Good Sonar Kollektiv 7.0
A London DJ/producer and a Bristolian vocalist are The White Lamp, and the vocals play an important role when they bring to mind a little touch of Stevie type Wonder.
Boston Bun
Housecall Ed Banger 6.0
Parisian producer Boston Bun continues Ed Banger’s new flavour by delivering a quirky take on a deep modern electro house package, which bodes well for all concerned.
newly-recorded version of an old demo. For a man who has supposedly taken a step back from the limelight, the LCD/DFA man’s name pops up a lot on this page this month, and for all the right reasons.
Punx Soundcheck feat Feral Is Kinky
Heavy Medication Birth Records 7.0
The Punx Soundcheck boys, John Taylor & Arif Salih, have been kicking out their own brand of deep bass electrobahcore for a while now, and ‘Heavy Medication’ sees a further mutation into a kind of dropstep dubmonster that really makes its own mark. The vocals from Feral Is Kinky give it enough of a commercial appeal, that may see it faring even better than her own recent Beatport top five placing at the end of last year.

9.0 AUTOKRATZBAD LIFE
01. ALEX METRIC ‘Prophecies’ OWSLA “Hot electro pin-up Alex Metric offers up this extraordinarily BIG electro
number, continuing his fine form after ‘Rave Weapon’.”
02. ATTAQUE ‘Blinded By The Moonlight’ Bad Life “Pint-sized Attaque makes up for his lack of growth hormones by constantly
delivering us devastatingly good teched-up electro. This is no exception.”
03. DAVID AKZ ‘Ultralight’ Bad Life “The new project from Dave Autokratz, currently working super well on the
housier dancefloors. Lots more to come here.”
04. MUMBAI SCIENCE ‘Impact’ Lektroluv “We love everything these guys do, and each release works so well peak-time.
Tried ‘Impact’ out last week in Sicily and it smashed the place to pieces.”
05. D/R/U/G/S ‘Tyrannosaur’ Bad Life “Great forward-thinking young British producer that we are extremely
excited to welcome to Bad Life. He did great at the festivals last summer and we expect the same again this year.”
06. GREEN VELVET & HARVARD BASS ‘Lazer Beams’ Cajual “Such great fun to play out. Full of Green Velvet’s inimitable cool — HIT ME,
HIT ME, HIT ME WITH THOSE LAZER BEAMS!”
07. SCUBA ‘Talk Torque’ Hotflush “You can’t imitate Scuba’s music, can you? He really is a wonderful producer.”
08. SHADOW DANCER ‘Pressurized’ Bad Life “A track they wrote in the late ‘90s that’s only just seen the light of day, as
part of their current album on Bad Life ‘Love From Alan & Paul’. The full- length is full of forgotten gems like this.”
09. S-FILE ‘Auxout’ GND “GND are one of our favourite labels of the moment, and great to see them
often getting the recognition they deserve on this page. This is the new one from the label boss, Sven.”
10. SOUND OF STEREO & URCHINS ‘Awkward Peanuts’ Bad Life “Super-excited to have this one on Bad Life, one of our favourite Belgian acts
collaborating with a great new UK producer. You’ll hear this one a lot over the coming months.”
Boys Noize
Ich R U Remixes BNR
8.0
‘Ich R U’ is the single from current album ‘Out Of The Black’, which highlights Alex Ridha’s more accessible side, and here it gets the remix treatment from Jacques Lu Cont, D.I.M. and Van She. JLC has been quiet on the remix front of late and his take is a driving dancefloor belter that makes you hope he is going to be more prolific this year. BNR’s own D.I.M. supplies a surprising housey/ garage hybrid, whilst Van She go for a later hours feel.
Chairman Miaaoow
Daytime Radio Hit Corsair Records 9.0
A smash-up funkathon of sitars, hammond organs and flutes make merry over a psychedelic mix of horns and electronic noise, all
A two-tracker featuring the original and a dub version, this is a cover of Daft Punk’s classic, which is all but unrecognisable, and all the better for it. After all, why try and improve on perfection when you can stretch and pull a track in as many different directions as Almany does? It’s no surprise that there’s a DFA connection to this New York City release, which is an experimental, atmospheric mini-masterpiece.
pulled together by a raging bass and drums combination. This cheekily-titled debut from the wonderfully named ‘Chairman Miaaoow’ has self-fulfilling prophesy written all over it. Groove is a highly over-used (and rarely warranted) word, but this would have the likes of George Clinton out on the dancefloor alongside everybody else.
Melodysheep feat Bill Hicks & George Carlin
The Big Electron Youtube/Soundcloud
7.0 There are plenty of apps and bits of software that turn the spoken word into a melody, and here some exceptionally choice words from two of the best American ‘comedians’ ever to grace a stage are made to fit a mellifluous tune. The backing is a dreamy electro- ambient affair, the message is a good one and the overall effect hangs together brilliantly. Well worth searching out and highly unlikely to ever get an official release.
Pulp
After You Free download 7.0
Jarvis Cocker’s lot have been suffering the same dilemma of other reunitees from the ‘90s, that is, do they take the acclaim from reformation gigs through to making new material? Pulp have solved the question by enlisting James Murphy to produce a
Raudive
Obsessions EP Get The Curse Music
8.0 The tough, funky drum and bass combo and the squeals and shouts of ‘Obsession’ mean that you can’t help but bring James Murphy to mind again. Raudive’s Oliver Ho, more usually known for minimal techno stylings, certainly isn’t aping the DFA head honcho here, rather using the same influences to deliver a couple of grooveadelic stormers. ‘Romantic Robot’ runs with the same theme and completes an accomplished double.
Skrillex
Leaving EP OWSLA
5.0 There’s not much here that you might not expect, unless you’re surprised at how conformist and safe it actually sounds. Having yet to be convinced that inducing moshpits has any relevance at all to ‘dance’ culture, the only thing of interest for me here is the more laidback approach that the title track takes.
Swim
Ride (Turbo Turbo Remix) Bad Life/GND 7.0
Turbo Turbo holds up the GND end of this top partnership and adds his distinctive thump and grind to new British band Swim’s original track ‘Ride’ — a free download. The result is something of a modern hi-NRG-y stormer that offers a big room appeal without taking any prisoners when it comes to making commercial compromises.
